I’m so excited I can get my Bettie Page fix thanks to this Halloween Special. Within the Bettie Page Halloween Special there are 2 tales. Pickman’s Supermodel is written by David Avallone, illustrated by Julius Otha, colored by Ellie Wright, and lettered by Taylor Esposito.
Pickman’s Supermodel starts off with Lyssa and McKnight recruiting Bettie for help. We actually get introduced to Irving Klaw in this issue. I’m sure Bettie fans remember him, his wife, and all those pictures that were once forgotten but resurfaced. Anyway, the agents need Bettie’s special talent as a model to work with their latest target.
It’s up to Bettie to use her charms to get into artists Pickman’s house. They’re hoping she can offer to model for a painting and get in easily without rising Pickman’s eyebrow. Bettie must find out how he’s able to get super detailed paintings of what appears to be monsters. The only thing she’s given to protect herself is a 22 pistol. Can Bettie’s wits save the day again?
Our second tale, Haunting in Hollywood plot by Leah Williams, illustrated by Fernando Rulz, color by Valentina Pinto, and Letters by Taylor Esposito.
This story follows Bettie and Lyssa attending a Halloween party at a famous director’s house. Both ladies have put together some creative costumes for this shindig. The girls have to navigate their way through a spooky haunted house. The party is at the end of the tunnel, but what twists and turns await the ladies in the fog?
Overall I was pleased with the tales in this one shot. Just as you expected, Halloween fun that puts our favorite pinup model at the center of attention…well, maybe I should use the word danger. We also got to reunite with McKnight and Lyssa. And, it’s always a plus when someone from Bettie’s real life modeling adventures is added into the mix. If you haven’t seen Irving Klaw’s photo’s google them and their history. You won’t be disappointed.
Fans will of Bettie Page will enjoy seeing Bettie in creative and spooky situations. The stories are creative and blend the beauty and charm of Bettie Page with a taste of the macabre. Just in time for Halloween.
