From Romero to Overlord: A Visual History of Zombies in Film

Written by Tom Moore

Zombies are easily one of the most iconic, fan favorite monsters in film history. They’ve basically become their own genre at this point. They’ve got their own a set of rules, and a look that is understood on a mainstream level.

People identify the shambling corpses to be among the scariest creatures to see on the big screen. Also, let’s be real, everyone has taken some kind of quiz or asked their friends what they would do in a zombie apocalypse.

But, why is this important? Well, not only is it Halloween, but this October actually marks the 50th anniversary of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. This is the film that many regard as the film where zombies truly first rose out of the ground. With this film, Romero basically created what the iconic creature would look like, and began the journey for many other filmmakers to follow.

So now it’s time for us to take that same journey and take trip through the changing looks of zombies throughout cinema history.
