From Romero to Overlord: A Visual History of Zombies in Film

28 Days Later (2002)

This zombie flick took us across the pond and gave the world some of the fastest and probably most aggressive zombies we had seen at the time. Seeing their shadows move across London tunnel walls was horrifying and it only gave notice to the fact that the real threat wouldn’t be too far behind. Their eyes would be bloodshot and even bleeding and letting just a drop get inside your body would seal your fate.

The virus, known as the Rage virus, would turn you from a normal civilian into a hostile zombie in just moments. Brendan Gleeson’s Frank learns this the hard way, unfortunately, as he is infected through a drop of blood coming from a crows beak and into his eye. Seeing his transformation is truly bone-chilling as it’s not just have the emotional weight of his daughter Hannah watching, but the convulsing and change of his voice into a nasty growl is almost too tough to watch.
