From Romero to Overlord: A Visual History of Zombies in Film

Re-Animator (1985)

When making a list like this, it’s impossible not to talk about the H.P. Lovecraft classic, Re-Animator.

With the main protagonists attempting re-animate dead tissue, this film has some of the most disturbing creatures you’ll see on this list. The first reanimated corpse, Melvin, captures what many would expect to see of a walking corpse with grayish skin and plenty of blood spilling out of his mouth.

The film even has a headless corpse spring back to life and to reattach its dismembered head. Just looking at the dismembered head of David Gale’s Dr. Carl Hill on the table as he attempt to talk is bone-chilling. He even finds a way to control Melvin and gets him to find his head a new body. Watching him control his body as a dismembered head is really what makes the film iconic and showed that removing the head can’t always keep a good zombie down.
