From Romero to Overlord: A Visual History of Zombies in Film

Day of the Dead (1985)

The third entry in Romero’s Dead series, Day of the Dead brought more a research heavy side to the series as humans look to understand the zombies. It has more of a zombie character to follow with the very memorable Bub actually having a bit of a personality to him. Don’t get me wrong, he is still the limbering corpse that we’ve seen before, but he actually emotes more human traits and even attempts to speak.

Bub enjoys listening to music, aiming guns, and even expresses sadness at the sight of the corpse of Dr. Logan after the evil Rhodes guns him down.

It’s an interesting take on the walking dead and in an odd turn of events, many find themselves rooting for Bub to get his revenge. After all, let’s be honest, who didn’t crack a smile when Bub shoots Rhodes into a horde of zombies and ironically salutes him as he leaves him to get eaten alive.

Bub’s inclusion marks a true turning point for the genre and showed that mindless walking dead might not be as brainless as many believe.
