From Romero to Overlord: A Visual History of Zombies in Film

Dead Alive (1992)

While many highly regard Peter Jackson for his adventures in Middle-Earth, many long-time fans probably remember his goopy, gory horror-comedy classic, Braindead, aka Dead Alive.

The zombies here seem a little bit cartoonish but that’s only because of Jackson use of practical effects created some fun looks. The zombies look gross, in a good way, with skin torn away from the mouth and blood soaked and dripping everywhere they walk. Their limbs were able to be hacked off a moment’s notice, but ironically the dead would still walk.

This led to probably one of the bloodiest scenes in film history with Timothy Balme’s Lionel using a lawnmower blade to decimate each zombie that skulked towards him to a bloody pulp.

Some may freak out just seeing the Sumerian Rat-Monkey, but the flesh-peeling, sometimes faceless zombies, (and even zombie babies), will cause a real fright.
