From Romero to Overlord: A Visual History of Zombies in Film

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)

The zombies here were the stuff of nightmare for any kid growing up in the late 90s. Usually just having to worry about criminals in masks, even Scooby and the Mystery Inc. gang were surprised to be up against real zombies after accepting an invitation to investigate a haunted plantation.

What’s interesting about these incarnations of the undead is that there is a big variety of looks and time periods. This Scooby-Doo adventure really stood out on how make the classic creature scary for kids with the undead ranging from modern day zombies to pirates to Civil War soldiers hunting on a new battlefield. The creatures hanging jaws, outlines of ribs punching through skin, and the moans and groans they made still send shivers down people’s spines.

Also, let’s be real, that scene where Fred rips off the zombie’s head, thinking it’s just a mask, and the zombie twists and turns his head back on is unforgettable and truly iconic.
