Review: ‘The Tsuranga Conundrum’ is Vintage Doctor Who

So far I have loved every episode of Doctor Who this season. And, the nice thing about this season is that if you miss an episode you can pick up without missing a lot. Obviously there’s a cohesive story, but, if you missed last week’s episode you can still jump into the current episode without too much confusion. The writing is just that good.

Alright let’s jump into a little back story of The Tsuranga Conundrum. Basic synopsis, this episode starts off in an unexpected way. All the companions and The Doctor are on a junk planet, and are looking for an oddly specific part that The Doctor needs. With high-tech metal detectors in hand they all work together to find the part.

Before long Graham gets a hit, and just when things are looking up…well, things aren’t as they seem. After some investigation The Doctor warns everyone that Graham has found a sonic mine. Then, they all wake up in the medical bay of a place The Doctor doesn’t recognize. She frantically wants to get back to the TARDIS. Remember, they were just on a junk plant scavenging for parts. And, everyone wants their hands on her amazing time-traveling beauty.

Obviously I don’t want to totally spoil this episode so I think that’s enough synopsis for now.

But, I will tell you some non-super-specific goodies you can look forward to. Obviously The Doctor gets to interact with some new characters in the medical bay. And, even though these characters all have short time on screen, they are amazingly well-written and you get a lot of decent back story on each one. The companions also do a great job of interacting with the new characters to show even more amazingly well-written story development.

And, this is a mild spoiler for the episode, but it’s one of my favorite aspects of Doctor Who in general.

There’s an intro to a cute, but highly dangerous creature. One that even the doctor doesn’t recognize. For new Whovians, it’s very odd to encounter a creature that the Doctor hasn’t interacted with along her travels. And, as each little detail is unveiled about this creature is just adding up to a challenge for the Doctor and her companions.

I didn’t have any complaints about this episode. There was a lot of action, character development, and creature development that meshed perfectly. This season continues on its strong streak, and I can’t wait to watch even more.
