This review will have spoilers for Issue #1. You have been warned.
At the end of Issue #1 the crew of Serenity was offered a job to escort pilgrims to the holy land. Of course there is an obstacle in their way. A gang called The Chang Benitez.
Oh, and to make matters worse Zoe and Mal are wanted by the Alliance. This time they have a big bounty on their head and are being charged with murder and crimes against humanity.
Wash, Kaylee, and Inara are still on Serenity while the rest of the crew is doing the job. The good news is that the pilgrims actually feel more protected by Mal and Zoe even though they’re wanted. The bad news is that Zoe and Mal now have a big target on their backs. And, if you recall how Jayne is in general, he cares more about money than anything else. But, I’ll refrain from going into anymore detail on this matter. I wouldn’t want to spoil too much.
This issue establishes even more back story on Zoe and Mal. As the crew tries to navigate Bethlehem with the pilgrims there are insightful flashbacks. The Chang Benitez are in hot pursuit. And, to make matters worse the Alliance is hot on their trail. But, they have a job to get done, and so that’s what they’re doing their best to complete. Get the job done, get paid, and disappear.
This issue sets up a lot of tension for the crew. It’s obvious that Wash is worried sick about Zoe and will do anything to protect the woman he loves. There’s a pivotal point in this issue between the two that you just have to read for yourself. I also love how Pak seems to seamlessly write this comic series as if it was torn straight from the TV series and movie, Firefly flows perfectly. Pak continues to capture each characters individual personality.
Browncoats, you need Firefly in your life.
