The first teaser trailer for the third and final film of the new Star Wars trilogy today at Star Wars Celebration, and like so many I’m absolutely losing my mind. J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy officially unveiled the teaser for Episode IX, which is titled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.. The teaser is bound to give every fan goosebumps.
The camerawork in the teaser is breathtaking. From the beginning action shot with Rey battling a tie-fighter to the final shot of the wreckage of the Death Star — it’s utterly captivating.
We got plenty of surprises in the trailer. We saw Billy Dee Williams back at the helm of the Millennium Falcon as Lando Calrissian. The teaser confirmed that we’ll get to say our final goodbyes to Leia Organa, and to be honest, the waterworks started up during this scene (as they will in the theater).
However, the title is what is most intriguing. The rise of which Skywalker, exactly? Luke? Or are we finally confirming Rey’s lineage? Or will we see the rise of Kylo Ren and his redemption finally take place?
Then…there was the menacing cackle of Emperor Palpatine. As it echoed through my speakers it sent a chill down my spine. How is he even alive? Did he succeed in cloning himself prior to his death? Will both Rey and Kylo work together to defeat Palpatine? Whatever the case, after Rian Johnson killed off Snoke, we needed another invincible antagonist. Palpatine is just what this saga needs for its final chapter.
Personally, I would love to see the rise of Anakin Skywalker to assist Rey in defeating Kylo and the Emperor. Maybe we’ll see some fighting Force Ghosts and, in that case, I’ll be ecstatic.
The future of Star Wars is around the corner, and like any future, it’s unclear. This is the closure of the Skywalker saga, and Christmas cannot get here soon enough.
