Part One of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ended with Sabrina signing the book of the beast and accepting her fate as a child of darkness.
Part Two begins with Sabrina’s dream where she is witnessing a satanic equivalent of a Christ-like birth. Satan is there to bless the baby, while three king-looking demons stand close by.
As any film or television fan knows, no dream is ever without meaning or foreshadowing. Is Sabrina the Christ-like baby? The Dark Lord’s obsession with her seems to point to it. In terms of openers, this was a strong way to go if the season will point to Queen Sabrina or even High Priestess Sabrina.
It is Sabrina’s first full time year at The Academy and Father Blackwood is looking for a Top Boy, who will basically be his right hand man. Nick (Gavin Leatherwood) has been chosen to test for the position, but Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) finds the position to be sexist and insists on running against him. They must each face three challenges and the winner will be Top Boy, but someone doesn’t want Sabrina to win and summons three demons to take her out of the running.
These same three demons were in Sabrina’s dream sequence. Three is a holy number, like the holy trinity, and it is used quite a bit in this episode. We have the three weird sisters, these three demon kings and three challenges to become Top Boy. Again, this could point to the potential of Sabrina being some unholy highness. Also, Top Boy is a rise in power, supposedly the step before becoming High Priest. If Sabrina wins, it’s just another step towards power. Perhaps The Dark Lord’s plan all along?
Throughout the episode, the misogyny of the Satanic Church becomes more apparent as Sabrina’s powers prove to be larger than anyone expected. The only man that doesn’t seem to be threatened by Sabrina’s powers is Nick, whom she has gotten closer to since her breakup with Harvey (Ross Lynch). Harvey, meanwhile, has been getting closer to Ros (Jaz Sinclair).
I actually like Sabrina with Nick. It seems to make more sense than her relationship with sensitive old Harvey. Nick just seems more her speed, especially considering that he is part of the world she now lives in. Harvey lives in a very black and white kind of world and Sabrina is very grey. It does seem a bit hypocritical that he can’t handle Sabrina being a witch, but Ros is clairvoyant. To be fair, I am not sure he knows that yet, but something tells me he won’t put up a fight about it. I mean, clairvoyant is probably safer than Satanic in the long run.
Sabrina’s life has changed drastically since signing the book, pulling her further from her mortal friends and closer to her purpose with the beast. Personally, I am all for Sabrina going full-on Dark Phoenix, but we all know that pesky humanity is bound to get in the way. Who knows? Maybe she will shed her mortal skin and fulfill whatever evil destiny awaits her. There really is only one way to find out.
