Angel #0 is written by Bryan Edward Hill, illustrated by Gleb Melnikov, and is published by Boom! Studios.
Before I dive too deep into this issue I would like to start off by telling readers that, yes, Angel ties directly into Buffy. It’s a little important for you to have read Issue #4 of Buffy before diving into this. And, I recommend that you read both tales. If you haven’t read Buffy #4 yet, mild spoiler in the next paragraph.
At the end of Buffy #4 we saw a cameo from Angel. Dru and Spike were trying to turn a beloved scooby into a soul-less vamp. And, honestly it looked like the character was ready to lose their soul. I don’t want to totally spoil Buffy for readers. So, I recommend that you pick up Buffy #4 to see what led to the events.
Angel #0 follows the events that led him to Sunnydale. The pieces aren’t fully in place. But, we get some glimpses of his origin. We can see the time period that Angel became a vampire. He lets readers know that he’s cursed. And, if you’ve never seen the series Angel had the curse of being a vampire with a soul. It’s hard to eat and murder folks when you have a pesky soul. Which is why the other vamps could care less about what their meals are feeling.
This issue basically sets up everything a new reader could possibly want to know about Angel. And, the story does well to keep mystery and make readers want more. I’m really happy that the writers are inter-twining Buffy and Angel. Honestly it would just be odd if one tale wasn’t with the other. Fans of the TV show will be happy, and new fans will enjoy learning all about our favorite vampire with a soul.
