From March 29, to May 24, Shudder hits it out of the park with Season One of The Last Drive-In: with Joe Bob Briggs. Every Friday night at 9 p.m., Joe Bob and Darcy the Mail girl (Diana Prince) headed back to the drive-in to present a horror double feature, note some film facts about each movie shown for the evening, and read fan mail (like it was back during Joe Bob’s Monstervision days).
The first night of season one began with CHUD and Castle Freak, and for the season finale, they showed Blood Harvest and Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2. Each film presented over the nine week season has been very entertaining. It’s been fun to watch live every Friday evening on the Shudder app, along with other fans around the world tuning in the same time. My favorite episodes were probably Week 3 (Deathgasm and The Changeling), Week 5 (Demon Wind and The House of the Devil) and Week 8 (The Stuff and Street Trash).
I loved during the season finale that Joe Bob showed a video of Tiny Tim watching Joe Bob talk about Blood Harvest back during his Joe Bob’s Drive-in Theater episode. it was an awesome moment during the finale and the ending of Season One was something to see for sure!
Shudder brought Joe Bob back last summer for what was going to be a final farewell marathon. He would host a 24 hour marathon that would please fans, and send Joe Bob on his merry way. But, what they didn’t know what would happen is that they “broke” the internet. There were so many people that subscribed, including yours truly, to tune in and watch Joe Bob do his thing, that the Shudder servers crashed. This caused many to have technical issues and were not being able to watch his marathon. This caused Shudder to bring Joe Bob back for two more marathons at Thanksgiving and Christmas. (I wrote an article about the Christmas marathon that you could read).
Each marathon was just as successful as the summer marathon. Fans were demanding more and more Joe Bob, so we were lucky enough to have Season One of The Last Drive-In. After week eight of the season, it a second season was announced. It’s not sure when but when it’ll return but I will be eagerly waiting to tune back on the app to watch more Joe Bob.
Those nine weeks were very exciting. I was able to watch some movies I’ve never seen before, or some that I cherish so dear to my heart! I strongly recommend movie buffs out there to check out Shudder and search for Joe Bob Briggs (his marathons, and season one of the last drive-in are all up there, ready to watch except for some titles due to distribution/legal issues not available in Canada).
I give season one of “The Last Drive-In” five stars, Josh B. says check it out!
