“The Other Thing” Plot Summary:
Sarge (Clark Gregg) and May (Ming-Na Wen) have a one-on-one chat while the agents in space face off against the Chronicoms.
Getting answers is generally a good thing. After all, no one wants their most pressing questions to remain unanswered. The longer questions go unanswered, the longer we have to theorize what the truth is. The trouble is that our expectations can get in the way.
I’m not exactly sure what answers I was expecting from this week’s episode, but I’m not completely satisfied. The answers feel mundane compared to the craziness of the last episode. Sarge and his team want to avert some sort of planet-destroying plague, and they go after things that don’t belong, hence why they went after Deke (Jeff Ward). As for the Chronicoms, they need Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) to save their homeworld, presumably from this plague.
There are still some interesting bits in this episode, though. The connection between Sarge and Coulson is made stronger. Now he’s quoting Coulson, even if he’s unaware of it. However, the episode doesn’t provide all that much information via the Tahiti flashbacks. We’ll probably get more in the weeks to come.
Just because I’m mildly disappointed with this episode’s answers doesn’t mean the season is doomed. We’re only five episodes in, after all. There are still plenty of things that we don’t know. Something or someone is controlling this planetary scourge, supposedly. And the jury is still out on what’s up with Sarge.
This week’s episode serves the purpose of exposition and little else, but exposition has to happen for the plot to move along. I should be grateful, considering I previously complained about the lack of focus on the plot. I can give the show on pass. And while I’m not hooked on Fitz’s current storyline, a lot can happen with him and Simmons reunited.
