‘The Detour’ Season 4 Premiere Review: A Great Mix of Laughs & Heart

After an absolutely phenomenal season three finale, The Detour Season 4 is FINALLY here!

The Parker Family (Jason Jones, Natalie Zea, Liam Carroll) find themselves searching all over the globe for their runaway daughter, Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich). Paraguay, Tibet, and even New Zealand are some of the destinations the family travel to in the premiere episode, ‘The Search.’

If you’ve ever read anything I’ve ever written about the show, there’s always a focus on the balance between comedy and heart. The over-the-top comedy of the premiere includes: Nate Parker (Jones) falling off a mountain for a very long time, and the Parkers going down a waterfall in a small boat while looking for a shortcut. I definitely had more than a few laugh out loud moments during this one.

The heart, however is in Nate’s willingness to do anything and everything to find Delilah. He literally goes to the ends of the Earth to find her. He follows every single lead and clue he can possibly find in the videos that Delilah is sending them — even if he is walking directly into danger.

At the end of the episode, when Robin and Jareb head back home, Nate refuses to go with them. He says he can’t be a good father and husband to them until he finds her.

As I’ve come to learn, there is usually some sort of twist on this show as well. My wife had suggested the Delilah was sending the videos using a green screen as a misdirect. However, it’s revealed after Delilah is seemingly eating a corn dog in Egypt that she is misleading her family. She’s been closer to home than we thought this whole time. The evidence finally reveals that Delilah is filming these videos from a local miniature golf course.

As soon as that proverbial light bulb turns on over Nate’s head he immediately jumps off a boat in New Zealand and starts swimming towards home.

The series is back and better than ever. They haven’t missed a beat. The season that I am affectionately dubbing as “The Search for Delilah” is one I very much look forward to. The show is sticking to it’s guns, and there is a formula here that works. After being on the run together for three seasons, I absolutely cannot wait until the family is together again. The search continues.

Rating: 8.5/10

The Detour Season 4 airs Tuesday nights at 10:30 p.m. on TBS.
