SDCC Panel Reaction: Marvel Studios Stuns with Phase 4, Disney+, Female Thor & Blade Announcements

The past couple days, SDCC has debuted some incredible movie trailers, teased new original TV/streaming series, and announced upcoming adorable Funko POPs, but perhaps the most impressive thing to come from this year’s SDCC (so far) is the borderline overwhelming amount of Marvel Studios announcements for Disney+ streaming and feature films. For complete details click here.

Feature Film News:

Thor: Love and Thunder is probably the most anticipated announcement for Marvel Comics fans. Following the comics, Natalie Portman will return to take the mantle of Thor, joining stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. The film will be directed by Taika Waititi and is scheduled for theatrical released November 5, 2021.

Black Widow will finally be getting her solo time to shine. Of course, Scarlett Johansson will star, along with David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz. Cate Shortland will direct and we can expect the movie in theaters May 1, 2020. We had some idea this movie was coming, but I’m rather curious about what it will entail. Is it her origin? Is it going to follow the recent comic storyline (sort of) where everyone thinks she’s dead but really she’s out doing her own thing? Maybe even a bit of both? Either way, I’m pumped.

Who isn’t ready for the return of Benedict Cumberbatch? I hardly count His brief appearance in Endgame as his true return. We still have a bit of a wait ahead of us, but we can take solace in knowing that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters May 7, 2021. Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will have a prominent role and Scott Derrickson will return as director. There’s going to be SO MUCH magic. *sparkles*

The Eternals is going to bring even more big Hollywood names into the MCU. I can honestly say, I never expected to see Angelina Jolie in a Marvel film, this is how far we’ve come. Starring with Angelina Jolie, we have Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh and Don Lee. Chloé Zhao will be directing and the film will be released in theaters November 6, 2020.

The most exciting movie upcoming movie reveal, in my opinion, is for the classic Master of Kung-Fu himself, Shang Chi, is making his big screen debut. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is set to star Simu Liu (as Shang Chi), Awkwafina (character not yet named), and Tony Leung (as the Mandarain). The movie is scheduled for released February 12, 2021.

Finally for film news, **drum roll please** – Kevin Feige introduced Mahershala Ali to star as Blade! We’re FINALLY getting a Blade to be connected into the current MCU. It’s going to be a blast.

Disney+:

The first Marvel Studios show coming exclusively to Disney+ will debut in Fall 2020. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier starring Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, and Daniel Brühl. Streaming exclusively on Disney+, Fall 2020. Although we haven’t been given a definitive plot, we do know Sam receiving/accepting the shield from Steve will factor into the series in some way, but no further information was given.

I hate to say it, but Marvel Studios hasn’t always done their greatest work with their animated series. However, What If…?will hopefully break the mold. It has solid ground to stand on as it will be the first animated series in the MCU and will star Jeffrey Wright as the voice of The Watcher with many actors from across the MCU reprising their roles as their characters’ voices. What If…? will stream exclusively on Disney+ in Summer 2021.

Rather than his own movie, Jeremy Renner’s, Hawkeye, will get his own original series which will introduce Kate Bishop. Other than that, not much else is known about the show just yet. It will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ in Fall 2021.

I’m really intrigued about where Marvel Studios will go with WandaVision. It will be an original series starring Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, and Teyonah Parris. Considering the events of Infinity War and Endgame, I’m not really sure when the series will take place. I assume before, but it could be after. It’s comics after all, anything is possible. WandaVision will stream exclusively on Disney+ starting in Spring 2021.

Finally, our beloved Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role of the loveable, maniacal brother of Thor, Loki in, Loki. We can expect to see Loki streaming exclusively on Disney+, Spring 2021.
