Phoebe Ryan Delivers a Star-Making Performance at The Fillmore

Pop Break Live: Phoebe Ryan Opening for Carly Rae Jepsen at The Fillmore in Philadelphia

If you thought the oppressive heat in Philadelphia this weekend would keep any Carly Rae Jepsen fans away from her show at The Fillmore you’d be dead wrong. With a heat index hanging at around 105 you’d think the crowd would be slightly lethargic before Jepsen’s set but thanks to opening act Phoebe Ryan, a New Jersey native, that was not the case.

This singer/songwriter has been turning heads since her 2015 mash-up of Miguel’s “Do You” and R. Kelly’s “Ignition.” It also didn’t hurt that one of the worlds biggest pop stars, Taylor Swift, give her a nod/shout out on Ryan’s first single, “Mine.” Ryan, quite the writer, has written for the likes of Britney Spears and has collaborated with some big names in the music industry like EDM superstars The Chainsmokers, among others.

Her set included a mix of songs from her two previous albums and some newer stuff she recently released. She encored with “Mine,” a beautiful song from her debut album of the same name. It really shone a light on her incredible writing skills.

Having read her pre-show instagram post from earlier in the day, it appeared she was a little nervous for her set. Who wouldn’t be, right? It was the first night of a 15 date trek with Jepsen. The crowd saw none of that. Backed by a drummer and keyboard player, her fun set was pure pop at its finest. She came off self-assured and truly at ease in her surroundings. At times she was just grinning from ear to ear. She even had a little Jersey swagger going on. The crowd really fed off her energy and it set the tone for what would turn out to be an incredible night of music in Philly. For her opening night, it couldn’t have gone any better.
