‘From the Ashes’ Plot Summary:

The team must convince Sarge (Clark Gregg) to help them stop Izel (Karolina Wydra).

Last week’s episode was the best of the season, so it’s a tough act to follow. “From the Ashes” isn’t the same kind of episode; it’s less action-focused. “From the Ashes” instead gives us crucial information and builds on character. After all, sometimes it’s important to slow things down.

The episode starts with a nice trick, making it look like Izel ditched Yo-Yo’s (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) body, only to reveal Izel is in Mack (Henry Simmons). I should have seen through the ruse, especially after last episode, but I’ll admit it fooled me. It’s a smart way for Izel to find out what she wants to know. Izel has displayed herself as shrewd and manipulative time and again. Izel also shows this when she torments Dr. Benson (Barry Shabaka Henley). The show previously alluded to Benson’s past, so it’s good to get more info. Taking a loved one off life support is a decision none of us ever want to have to make. Izel is truly cruel for making him question his decision.

“From the Ashes” dives into Daisy’s (Chloe Bennet) grief as well. Daisy has a tendency to run away from her problems, rather than face them head-on. It’s admittedly a little strange how she comes to terms with Coulson’s death by treating Sarge like Coulson, going as far as hugging him. I suppose it’s a matter of admitting her emotions.

Izel has everything she needs to open rebuild the monoliths, now that she has Flint (Coy Stewart). There’s a face no one ever expected to see again. But our heroes have a way to counter Izel’s powers and maybe even kill her. Deke (Jeff Ward) figuring out Izel’s powers is a pleasant surprise. He’s clueless sometimes, but he’s still from the future.

Not exactly anything groundbreaking this week, but even the greatest shows have slow episodes. This week’s episode does its job of setting up the finale next week. Time to end this.
