Pop Break Live: MARINA ‘Love + Fear Tour’ at The Met in Philadelphia
Welsh/Greek singer songwriter Marina played to a sold out crowd at The Met in Philadelphia on September 14. Marina, whose former stage name Marina and the Diamonds, started turning heads in the U.S after the success of her second album Electra Heart, released in 2012. She is currently touring in support of her new album Love + Fear, released in April.
MARINA opened up with “Handmade Heaven,” one of the best tracks from her new release. She performed without a band and used a backing track so the stage setup was pretty simple in comparison to her elaborate production on her ‘Froot Tour’ in Philly a few years ago. There was an elevated platform where she performed numerous songs and she was also accompanied by four dancers. This type of setup doesn’t always go over well but this was not the case for this show. Without any distractions it really magnified Marina’s awe-inspiring vocal range, which was stunning on the slower stuff. Also some of the beautiful ballet moves made some of the performances even more special.
MARINA played a 20 song set and half were from her latest album. Often when you go to a show there may be a sing-along or two but Marina’s devoted fans sang their hearts out(loudly) on every single one. Her dancers really impressed as they provided the drama on songs that required it and provided the fun/energy on songs like “Bubble Gum Bitch.” Marina had a few solo turns, front and center with a piano, on songs like “Teen Idle” and “I’m Not Hungry Anymore.” Along the way there were many costume changes and some really great choreographed moves.
One of the songs that stood out was “Froot” in which the dancers used saber lasers. Also the intimate dance between two of her dancers during “Believe in Love” was beautiful. The hands in the air song goes to “Orange Trees,” a song in which Marina pays homage to her homeland of Greece. Another highlight was “Baby,” which really got the crowd dancing.
There was a two song encore. The first was “End of the Earth” which was an absolute visual treat! The lights were turned down low as the dancers swirled around in a frenzied fashion holding glowing globes. Marina ended the show with a high octane version of “How to be a Heartbreaker.” This show was pure pop at its finest.
