Harry Styles has returned to music, blessing fans with his new single “Lights Up.” The sound is different from any Styles has tried out before, whether with his former band One Direction or in his debut solo album, Harry Styles.
The pop track comes as a surprise after the rock sound on his first album, however it leaves nothing to be desired. The use of guitars, drums, and piano throughout the song creates a unique experience which feels almost like it’s transporting the listener to another place. There are some R&B influences and a choir singing alongside Styles, which keep the track interesting and different.
Styles’ lyrics are just as personal and beautiful as on his previous solo album. They speak to the feeling of finally being free and figuring out one’s identity.
The song and music video, featuring a diverse group of men and women surrounding Styles, premiered on National Coming Out Day, which left many fans speculating about the meaning of the lyrics. Styles’ sings, “Lights up and they know who you are/know who you are/Do you know who you are?” Many LGBTQ+ fans have since considered “Lights Up” a “bisexual anthem,” and have connected with it deeply, especially because Styles doesn’t put a label on his sexuality.
“Lights Up” is the perfect return to music for Styles and feels refreshing on the pop charts. It only demonstrates further that his second solo album is one to watch out for.
