You’re Next — Ann Hale
Another on my list of favorite home invasion films is You’re Next. While Hush is a suspenseful and, at times, terrifying film, You’re Next takes a different approach, using comedy and family issues to level out the amount of blood shed in this Adam Wingard classic.
A wealthy couple is joined by their children and significant others at their summer house to celebrate their anniversary weekend. It isn’t long before a group of animal masked killers attack, picking them off one by one. Little did the killers expect, one of the son’s girlfriends has a real talent for survival and isn’t going to go down so easy.
You’re Next is a fun horror comedy, showing family issues run deep—even when everyone is under attack. You can sense from the start that no one really wants to be there, catching passive aggressive insults from their siblings who think they are superior to everyone else, but it is necessary to understand this family dynamic in order to appreciate what is to come. The one person who stands out is the kind and quiet Erin, (Sharni Vinson) the Aussie girlfriend of one of the sons. Out of everyone, she is the one you would least expect to be a badass with a weapon, but she steps up and does all she can to protect her hosts, including brutal murder.
Prepare yourself for some hearty laughs and violently blood-soaked surprises with this one. You’ll find a whole new use for that blender sitting unused in your kitchen cabinet and will certainly think twice before running out your front door without looking first. If you’re looking for a solid horror flick that won’t give you nightmares, but will still keep you entertained, You’re Next is the one for you.
