Thank God the World Series is over and we can now get back to the madness that is The Masked Singer. But, with two weeks off, Fox gifted us with a double-header for The Masked Singer Week 6! We had 11 performers this week and two contestants unmasked.
First on stage was Rottweiler (“Love Runs Out by OneRepublic), followed by Ladybug (“Juice” by Lizzo), Tree (“Think” by Aretha Franklin), Penguin (“All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor), Flower (“Cheap Thrills” by Sia) and Fox (“Hey Look Ma, I Made It” by Panic! At the Disco). Each contestant this week shined.
The Rottweiler, a personal favorite of mine, was so good I felt like Ryan Tedder, lead vocalist of OneRepublic, was singing it. The Ladybug and Tree really brought confidence centerstage, proving that they can sing, which all the judges thought they weren’t seasoned at all. The Fox had a crazy dance breakdown which really shocked everyone. The clue packages are infested with red herrings everywhere to try to throw everyone off their game, but we know. The audience is used to this torture by now.
In the second hour, Black-ish star Anthony Anderson joined the judges panel. First to perform was Black Widow (“Believe” by Cher), followed by Thingamajig (“Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” by The Temptations), Butterfly (“Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones), Leopard (“Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry), and Flamingo (“Never Enough” by Loren Allred from The Greatest Showman). Once again, the competition is heating up. This episode was not as electric as the first one, but boy, it did not disappoint.
There were slower performances this episode by the Butterfly, Flamingo, and Thingamajig. All executed their song perfectly and didn’t miss a single note, still showing that they are in-it-to-win-it in this competition. Black Widow and Leopard gave us different renditions to their songs, which really kept the audience intrigued. And still, the Thingamajig is the cutest thing ever and does anyone else find it weird that judge Nicole Scherzinger is really trying to date him?
As they did last episode, the performers all got to put their heart out on stage before the judges and audience members voted on their favorite singer. The eliminations have gotten trickier because the remaining singers are all good-to-great singers. Last season, we only had about three amazing singers. With each week and better song choice, we’re starting to see the contestants gain confidence and love what they’re doing. Every performance is a great performance.
Ultimately, the Penguin and Black Widow were eliminated from their respective groups. Hilariously, Jenny McCarthy spent most of the show’s first season guessing that Sherri Shepherd was under one of the masks, she ended up being the Penguin—and while her name was floated as a potential Penguin a couple of times this season, none of the judges picked Shepherd as their final guess.
Meanwhile, Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger had been convinced that Raven Symone was the Black Widow for weeks, and credit to myself and them, we were right on the money. In one of the show’s weirder yet understated developments, the Black Widow had to perform with an arm cast during her last couple of performances—leading one to try to figure out what actually happened. Symone said it best: “Don’t ride a hoverboard at 33.”
Here’s my predictions for the rest of the cast:
- Chris Daughtry is the Rottweiler.
- Kelly Osbourne is the LadyBug. I just can’t hear anymore terrible guesses from the judge how they think it is Lindsay Lohan.
- The Flower is Patti Labelle. I’m serious about this one. I don’t even know why the judges are STILL entertaining that this could be anyone else.
- The Christmas Tree, I really don’t have a single guess. I’m so stumped. No pun intended.
- The Fox is Wayne Brady or maybe even Leslie Odom Jr., from Hamilton.
- Thingamajig is Victor Oladipo.
- The Butterfly is still Michelle Williams.
- The Leopard is Seal.
- The Flamingo is Adriene Bailon.
We’re now down to nine contestants this season, as The Masked Singer rages on without anymore interferences from the World Series.
