Smallville (The WB/The CW 2001-2011)
Although not lasting very long into the decade, Smallville lasted for an entire decade of its own from 2001-2011. The heartfelt, low-budget Superman origin story, namely known for its “no tights, no flights” rule, explores Clark’s teenage years at Smallville High and the nostalgic Kent farm before graduating to the Daily Planet. Whether it be the Kawachi caves, the Luthor mansion, or the coolest barn loft ever, the sets from the show are first class.
Smallville is likely best known, though, for the classical, yet strong takes on the characters. Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor is considered by many to be the best portrayal of the character ever. Tom Welling (my favorite actor), John Schneider, John Glover, Justin Hartley, Kristin Kreuk, and Erica Durance round out a talented cast.
Smallville also introduced the Justice Society of America masterfully and paved the way for DC shows to grow on The CW in an era when superhero television was not commonplace. Although not as strong in its later years, the show will live on as the best Superman-related show in the character’s canon.
