‘The Walking Dead’ Season 10 Midseason Premiere Review: An Awkward & Explosive Return

The Walking Dead Season 10 midseason premiere picked right up where we left off with Darryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride), and those that followed Carol and Daryl into the caves in pursuit of Alpha (Samantha Morton). Alpha tricked our heroes as to where The Whisperers kept their walker horde which allowed The Whisperers to surround the exits, thus preventing them from escaping the horde.

Meanwhile, Alpha remained concerned that our heroes knew where to go look for the zombie horde because there’s a spy in The Whisperers. Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) gave her the idea that it could be Gamma (Thora Birch) and when Gamma can’t be found, a group of Whisperers including Beta (Ryan Hurst) go look for her. Alpha wants to make an example out of her to the other whisperers. To reward Negan, Alpha takes him out in the woods, tells him to take his clothes off and the two have sex. In a truly awkward moment, Alpha keeps her walker skin mask on as they have sex.

Meanwhile in the cave, some survivors were starting to bring up Carol’s actions that led to them being stuck in a cave filled with walkers. Darryl tries to defend her, but he’s also questioning her actions. He understands why she wants to kill Alpha for what she’s done to her (e.g. killing Henry and the others). As they find a way out, they kill some Whisperers surrounding exits and crawled through some tight corners to get closer to ground level. That scene of them crawling their way up was very intense, and was the only time I felt entertained during the episode.

Another moment I liked was towards the end of the episode where they were reaching the exit of the cave and they found a case of dynamite; the track seemed very similar to the  “28 Days Later” track “In the House – In a Heartbeat.”  The scene sees more Whisperers running towards our survivors, but Darryl tries to stop Carol from using dynamite on the Walker horde which would cause their exit to close. But, some debris falls on the case of dynamite and explodes, trapping Magna and Connie in there. Carol tries to apologize for her actions, and begs Darryl to let her have it since she caused this. Darryl just walks away to try to find another entrance, and the other survivors follow.

I didn’t care for the Whisperer moments from tonight’s episode. The main plot with the survivors trying to escape the underground cave were the only exciting moments of The Walking Dead Season 10 midseason premiere, and I look forward to seeing when Gamma makes it to Alexandria next week to tell them about where the survivors are trapped.

Rating: 6 out of 10
