Swamp Thing (DC Universe 2019)
Written by Daryn Kirscht

While most of the world tries to deal with the effects of the coronavirus, many of us have been at home instead of work. This allowed me some extra time to finish up a dark, yet oddly relevant show I heard so much about but had not actually seen: Swamp Thing.

The 2019 DC Universe original series is heavily influenced by legendary comic creator Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing in the comics and is executive produced by James Wan (Aquaman). It debuted to great critical acclaim, but, sadly, was mysteriously cancelled after only a few episodes had aired, with even its season episode order being reduced from 13 episodes down to only 10.

What makes it a great watch for a time like this in our world is the relatability and escapism of its premise. The series focuses on Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed, Teen Wolf) as she investigates a deadly swamp-borne virus and unlocks deeper mysteries. Early in the pilot episode, there is a scene that might appear all-too-familiar for those having to deal with the coronavirus.

It is also a unique show in that it is more in the thriller/horror genre, as opposed to the usual action adventure genre of most DC TV series. In addition to the genre, the series location, central conceit, and suit designs are tremendous and worthy of the great acclaim fans and critics alike have showered on it. The series is currently still available on the DC Universe streaming service and is available for digital purchase on iTunes.

Editor’s Note: Swamp Thing will re-air on The CW starting October 6.
