It’s not every day that you get to chat will a 12-time Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, multi-time Soul Train and BET Music Award winner, six-time NAACP Image Nominee, and a winner of the NAACP Theater Award.
Yet, here I was a week ago sitting down to record a conversation with R&B superstar and actress, Ledisi.
Ledisi is the real deal on and off the stage. Not only is she a super-talented singer, but she’s also worked in film and television. You might’ve caught her in the George Clooney/John Krasinski football comedy Leatherheards, or as Mahalia Jackson in the Oprah Winfrey produced, Ava DuVernay directed Martin Luther King biopic, Selma. On May 27 of this year she’ll be portraying one of the most iconic singers in soul and R&B, Patti LaBelle, on the second season of BET’s American Soul.
Oh, did I mention she’s a published author as well? The list of accomplishment and accolades goes on and on for Ledisi, but getting to talk to the performer as a human being was the real treat. In this interview Ledisi opens up about what she feels her role is as an entertainer in these crazy times, and how creatives should be able to make the best of having to stay at home. She also tells the story behind her latest single, “Anything For You” and the message of love within the track.  With the sacrifices that countless workers are making to help combat this crisis all around the globe, the lyrics will surely resonate for everyone in a profound way.
So click on play on the audio interview below, as Ledisi and I talk music, inspiration, acting and for all our New Jersey readers, she even talks a little bit about Bruce Springsteen — in what is easily one of my favorites of all-time.
