Review: Wicked Things #1

Wicked Things #1 is created and written by John Allison, art by Max Sarin, Colors by Whitney Cogard, and Letters by Jim Campbell. Wicked Things #1 is published by Boom! Comics.

This introductory issue starts off with the introduction of Lottie AKA Charlotte Grote. 19 year old nerd who loves her mysteries, solving them, and is prepping to leave home for college.

Lottie’s mom is giving her a hard time about what to toss, what to pack, and what to leave behind. Then suddenly, her mom picks up a magazine titled National Solver. Lottie and her mom bicker back and forth about tossing the magazine. Then suddenly she notices that Lottie has been nominated for Teen Detective of the Year, and it’s Lottie’s last year to be eligible. Obviously it’s a huge deal.

Fast forward one month later and Lottie is on the way to the win this competition. Lottie and her friend, Claire, feel like princesses in the posh hotel and are excited to meet their competition. Ok, that’s only half true. And, the way it all plays out is quite hilarious. One thing I can say is it’s always cute to me to see a character in a comic totally fangirl over their peers. Lottie knows her competition like the back of her hand seemingly.

The night of the ceremony approaches. Lottie has new-found confidence and decides she will hold her head up high in hopes of winning. Of course, that’s not the whole story.

So, the bottom line is the concept of an award ceremony for detectives in the UK is cute. Wicked Things #1 mixes drama, dark comedy, and intrigue. I love it when a new series mixes such fun aspects. I look forward to reading the next issue, oh and spoiler not spoiler, there’s totally an awesome plot twist at the end. You have to read to see, happy reading!

Rating: 8/10
