Pop Break is honored to premiere the music video for ‘Waiting’ by Nick Ryan and The Mess.
‘Waiting’ is a video that perfectly captures the realism of the frustrations in both the current state of quarantine we’re in, and the world of relationships.
The performance aspect of the video was self-shot by the members of The Mess in literally whatever space they can find in their homes. The narrative aspect of the music video features actress Sydney Miller portraying an average 20-30 something adult who is “struggling to find connection and purpose in the confines of her own house during quarantine.”
While waiting for a potential virtual date, she tries everything from making herself over to yoga to learning the latest Tik-Tok dance to keep her mind off the date. Her frustrations are palpable and relatable … because we’ve all been there. It’s not until she stumbles upon a livestream of Nick Ryan and The Mess performing waiting that she finds a bit of relief not only from the confines of quarantine, but that frustrating restraint of waiting.
According to the band, the video for “Waiting” is “sure to invoke a comic realness to what everyone’s currently experiencing, while letting the viewers know that we’re all in this together.”
The song itself is heavily steeped in the Asbury sound — with Ryan’s vocals hitting those same inflections Bon Jovi has belted out for so many decades, and a wild saxophone solo that easily evokes images of E Street. However, the band’s main intentions are not to conjure audio imaginings of Asbury’s past. “Waiting,” according to the band, is their new spin on “heartland rock,” “Memphis soul,” and modern pop — all of which are very apparent.
Nick Ryan and The Mess, surprisingly, have been together for just a year, but are well-oiled rock ‘n’ roll machine. With “Waiting” they’ve created an undeniable ear worm, that’ll be a perfect addition to that Memorial Day (or any day) playlist.
