The 100 Season 7 Premiere Review: More Questions Arise in ‘From the Ashes’

The 100 Season 7 Premiere “From the Ashes,” leaves us with more questions than answers as we watch the writers attempt to satisfyingly wrap up this complex story after years of twists.

The show last left off with Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor, Christmas Inheritance) and her friends defeating the manipulative Primes and their false religion, along with Octavia Blake (Marie Avgeropolous, The Inbetweeners) getting stabbed by a friend from the “anomaly,” an unknown void to which she previously travelled. The first episode kicked off with a seemingly happy moment between Clarke, her adoptive daughter Madi (Lola Flanery, Shadowhunters), and the others while they decide how to navigate tensions between four groups that all exist in the same place now: Sanctum.

As far as The 100 Season 7 Premiere goes, it was a slow start to the season. Half of the episode focused on the warring groups: the believers of the divinity of the Primes, the children of Gabriel, Diyoza’s criminals from season five, and the main crew we’ve been keeping up with, especially as they navigate what to do with Prime ruler Russell Lightbourne (JR Bourne, Teen Wolf). The other half concentrated on the anomaly and the character it brought us, Hope (Shelby Flannery, Schlaf Nicht), who may be Diyoza’s daughter and have a connection to Octavia.

Like many premieres, it was a lot of catching up with the characters and seeing where the previous events left them. However, the story jumped straight back into the anomaly and its weirdness, which was confusing to keep up with. It’s hard to pinpoint the purpose of the anomaly or the society that lies within it, as well as the role it plays in the bigger picture. As we get further into the story, hopefully they’ll dive deeper into Hope’s character and how the anomaly relates to all of them.

The episode definitely picked up towards the end which left me excited to see where everything will go, especially to see Clarke back in a leadership position. Her journey is one I will always be interested in, along with Raven Reyes (Lindsey Morgan, General Hospital). I’m hoping this season brings a new story arc for Raven as well, and that it puts her back in the spotlight.

Some major questions were left unaddressed in the premiere, such as the whereabouts of main character Bellamy Blake (Bob Morley, Neighbours), and some were revealed sooner than expected, such as the return of Sheidheda, another antagonist from season six. However, the end of the episode left me enthusiastic for this season and how the story will unfold. The 100 seems to have a unique ability to keep viewers coming back for more, with consistently fresh problems to solve and just enough mystery that makes it hard to stay away. Check back next week for continued coverage of this final season!

The 100 Season 7 Premiere is currently streaming on the free, but ad-supported CW Network app.
