What happens when we die? Where do we go? Are we placed in a field of flowers and dreams with our favorite dead celebrities? Are evil people there too, like Hitler? Well, for Peter Steele it’s something entirely different. Issue 0 tackles where we, well Peter, went when he died.
Peter Steele, the former lead singer of Type O Negative, died in 2010 as a result of heart issues. Peter Steele Monster Hunter addresses this fact and uses it to catapult a story of Peter being greeted in the hereafter by Death. And, what can I say, Death isn’t what he expected. He is presented with options of where he would like to spend eternity. Halloween in Heaven, or Christmas in Hell?
As Peter and Death explore his after life options it’s clear that even in death things are not made for tall people. Yep, sorry to report that average height folks still get preferential treatment in the afterlife as Peter is knocking his head off low hanging objects. Once Peter gets to check out these places to make his ultimate decision, well, it’s obvious he’s not thrilled.
Of course, I’m not going to give full details of what happens with Peter’s decision and how good or bad the here after is. But, I can say that creator Bea R captured Peter’s personality perfectly. He always had very self-deprecating humor and was one of the nicest humans to grace the planet. Peter also took no bull shit and all of that was perfectly conveyed in this issue.
Peter Steele Monster Hunter does a great job of mixing fact and fiction to make a cohesive and dark-humored tale. For any fan of Type O Negative, it’s a must read.
