Pop Break’s Television Editor Alex Marcus is joined by editor-in-chief Bill Bodkin, and special guest Justin Mancini of Cinema Joes to talk about the happenings in television.
Here’s the format of the show:
The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, and Justin talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including HBO’s We Are Who We Are & The Leftovers; Pop’s Schitt’s Creek; Disney+’s Animal Kingdom; & Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor — the spiritual success to Mike Flanagan’s wildly popular Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House.
News Break – Alex, Bill, and Justin discuss the sad news that seven previously renewed series, including Netflix’s GLOW, ABC’s Stumptown and Comedy Central’s Drunk History have been cancelled due in part to COVID-19. For more, check out this round up from EW.
Streaming Wars – Alex, Bill, and Justin pick a streamer they think “won the month” based on new shows airing/upcoming shows announced etc. and whether it was Disney Plus, Netflix, Amazon, or another streaming platform that came out on top. Justin used Netflix’s upcoming movie slate to argue they had the best month, while Bill focused on Amazon’s slew of original series and high profile films, from Blumhouse horror productions to Coming 2 America, and the expansion of their NFL Thursday Night content with unique shoulder content and in-game options to make his claim. However, the guys both came around to Alex’s pick of Disney+ after the streamers big announcement regarding the future of Disney theatrical releases.
New Series Spotlight – Alex, Bill, and Justin travel back to the ’60s for a dull and unremarkable look at the space race with DisneyPlus’s The Right Stuff — an adaptation/remake of the The Right Stuff — both the film and the book by Tom Wolfe. The series stars Patrick J. Adams of Suits fame and Jack McDorman of ABC Family’s Greek.
