The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show is always a hot topic of conversation and this year was no different as The Weeknd was the headliner. What makes this show way different than shows in the past, is that the Canadian singer will be putting a large sum of his own money on the production of the show.

The Weeknd’s set opened with a gigantic choir signing in the singers adorned in a sequined red blazer (very Michael Jackson-esque). The opening track “Star Boy” had some audio issues as the vocals were a little overpowered by the backing music.

The stage show was absolutely flooring especially during “Earned It” off The 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack. Then things got wild with a “I Can’t Feel My Face” where he was in a hall of lighted mirrors and the singer was (seemingly) filmed with  a handheld camera. It was dizzying and over the top as he was crowded by men in surgical gauze. It was one of the boldest (and coolest) Super Bowl halftime show moments I’ve ever seen. Oh and those gauze men would return, in a vibe reminiscent of Jordan Peele’s Us, as they danced on the field with LED lights in the palm of their hand (which transitioned into “Blinding Lights”).

From there The Weeknd made the call to not have any special guests perform with him and he just went out and owned the entire Pepsi Halftime show with a swagger, bravado and big time command.

The Super Bowl LV Pepsi Halftime show concluded with “Blinding Lights” which has been played throughout the NFL Playoffs and was an absolutely showstopping number — it took over the entire field. The Weeknd’s choice for live vocals was pretty incredible.

In celebration of his performance The Weeknd and XO/Republic Records released a special project curated specifically for this show titled The Highlights This record presents some of The Weeknd’s biggest songs in one place for those who might only be familiar with the singer’s biggest hits or just those Pepsi commercials that ran throughout the NFL playoffs. The album dropped on Friday February 5.

According to a press release sent by XO/Republic this week, The Weekend announced the After Hours World Tour. The release states this tour will be a 104-date global tour will kick off on January 14th, 2022 in Vancouver at Pepsi Live at Rogers Arena with stops in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, Paris, London and more, before wrapping November 18th in Glasgow at SSE Hydro. Tickets go on sale beginning Monday, February 8th at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com.

And if that wasn’t enough The Weeknd dropped a video entitled “The Last Meal Before the Super Bowl.” In the video, The Weeknd can be seen enjoying a final feast on the field.
