Aaron and Josh are back with a new TV podcast, this time on a classic cartoon, Dexter’s Laboratory, celebrating the 25th anniversary of its premiere on Cartoon Network.
Dexter’s Laboratory first aired on TNT on February 26, 1995 as a seven-minute pilot based on creator Genndy Tartakoksky’s student films at CalArts. After three more test run episodes, Dexter’s Laboratory aired as a full series on April 27, 1996 on TNT and then Cartoon Network and TBS the next day. Dexter’s Laboratory would become the flagship for Cartoon Network’s original programming and a network staple, airing 78 episodes and a TV movie over four seasons from 1996 to 2003.
In the series boy genius Dexter, voiced by Christine Cavanaugh (Babe) and later Candi Milo (Chowder), attempts to keep his hyperactive sister Dee Dee, voiced by Allison Moore (The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat) and Kat Cressida (Doom Patrol), from ruining his inventions. Dexter also contends with rival boy genius, Mandark, voiced by Eddie Deezen (The Polar Express), who happens to be in love with Dee Dee. Kath Soucie (Space Jam) and Jeff Bennett, (Johnny Bravo) voice Dexter’s mom and dad, who are unaware of Dexter’s secret lab.
Dexter’s Lab was nominated four times in a row for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or Less) at the Primetime Emmy Awards from 1995 to 1998. The show also won three Annie Awards, including one for Christine Cavanaugh in 2000 for her voice acting in the TV movie Dexter’s Laboratory: Ego Trip. Overall, the show is considered one of the best cartoons Cartoon Network has ever produced and is remembered fondly by millions.
In this podcast Aaron and Josh take a look at the first episode that premiered on Cartoon Network when Dexter’s Lab became a full series. They also discuss other memorable episodes, the dynamic between Dexter and Dee Dee, and the show’s legacy.
