AEW Dynamite 4/14 kicked it up following last week’s controversial episode. The Young Bucks have finally decided to align with Don Callis and Kenny Omega. The Best Friends have an alien in their circle, and the Inner Circle is back on the scene with The Pineapple… I mean, Pinnacle retreating.
The shows kicks off with the AEW World Tag Team Championship match. Let’s be honest. Bucks + Fenix + PAC = All sorts of awesome. The Young Bucks are undoubtedly, the best tag team in modern wrestling. Change my mind. The match was incredible. Go find it on YouTube or the TNT App. You want me to somehow call a play-by-play for this? A number of teams are in the stands watching. I have a feeling we will see regular titles defenses on a regular basis in the near future.
It wasn’t just the big moves and spots which made the match, but the smaller things. The cameraman going to the wrong tunnel as the Bucks make their entrance, Matt going to the wrong corner in the first minutes of the match. Then of course later on, mocking the “hot tag” and the big hype rally in the ring. This details while mocking, do set the tone for the Bucks going forward.
The big shocker, Nick Jackson ripping off the mask of Rey Fenix, Bucks delivering stereo superkicks for the win.
Storywise, it works for me. Bucks have been conflicted ever since Don Callis, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows showed up. Then Omega turns. Finally, they cave in and embrace being bad dudes with attitudes.
Jade Cargill defeated Red Velvet
This was not a squash. Velvet got plenty of offense in, to the point where Cargill began to run defense. Cargill is a beast, and has the look and persona to maintain it during the match. However, despite being far physically superior to Velvet, her passion and fire would catch Cargill off-guard more than once, resulting in some close near falls.
My one critique, since it had appeared Velvet had given Cargill a run, putting her on defensive more than once, Cargill shouldn’t have done the arrogant pin at the end. She could have pinned clean for the win, but it would have put Velvet over as a future credible threat.
Backstage: Team Taz meeting, but Ricky Starks is pulling a very Rock-like performance with taking over the talking duties, which brings out some more animosity from Brian Cage. They talked about why Christian Cage hasn’t replied on the offer to join.
Well, in the ring we get the answer, as Christian Cage tells Taz he declines the offer. This results in Team Taz laying him out.
Anthony Ogogo punched out Cole Carter
It got the Olympic medalist on screen, while it wasn’t a true “impressive performance” it did portray him as QT’s major weapon of the stable.
Chris Jericho defeated Dax Harwood
Another fine match. Even with Mike Tyson patrolling ringside, the action remained focused in the ring. Dax, a tag team veteran is no slouch as a singles wrestler. Not too long ago he had an incredible match against Jungle Boy. Tonight was no different. Solid chemistry between Dax and Jericho, and I was damn impressed with Dax shellacking Jericho with a Brainbuster Suplex. The action got intense as a brawl erupted between Inner Circle and Pinnacle, even with MJF trying to assist with interference, it went in vain as Tyson knocked out Cash Wheeler as Jericho scores with Judas Effect to win.
May 5th, Blood and Guts is going to be a real ugly brawl, and I imagine there will most certainly, be blood.
Outside, Callis and Crew cut a promo, Bucks letting us know they haven’t really changed, just opted to put their nicer sides on the bench in order to truly embrace being the best damn tag team on the planet.
They’re not wrong, you know.
Kris Statlander defeated Amber Nova.
You know, Amber Nova isn’t a bad ring name. Except our returning alien mopped the floor with her. Statlander appears to not have missed a step in the slightest, using her power and agility to easily overpower her challenger. A press slam and the Supernova were undoubtedly good tonight.
The Main Event of AEW Dynamite 4/14: Darby Allin retains the TNT Championship against Matt Hardy – NO DQ
This one hit all the boxes for a spot-on main event. Singles match, check. Sting appearance, check. Big brawl between feuding stables, check. Foreign objects, check. Unexpected appearances by Ethan Page, Scorpio Sky, and Lance Archer? Check, check, and check.
With all which happened in one match, it was done smoothly, at no point did I feel like I lost glimpse into the match and what was transpiring both in and out of the ring. The main event had the earmarks of ECW written all over it.
Allin is a huge star in both wrestling and character portrayal. This turned nasty with Hardy clobbering Darby repeatedly with a chair, but the Darby fighting back, and fighting dirty on his own with Sting’s bat. This one is better being seen. Because it was just so good. It appears Archer may be siding with Sting, we did NOT see Jake Roberts tonight, now did we?
Things take a turn on the outside Darby puts Matt on a table, climbs a scaffold, and leaps with a Coffin Drop. Successful pinfall.
What a night. Lots of huge moments, and next week’s lineup looks even better.
