The best description of Loki Episode 4 ‘Nexus Event’ would be a condensation of the series as a whole: starting with a whimper to end with a bang.
After the events of episode three, Loki (Tom Hiddleston, The Avengers) and Sylvie’s (Sophia Di Martino, Yesterday) growing affection for each other (a delightful nod to each of their narcissistic personalities) is exactly what brings them back into the clutches of the Time Variance Authority. Once there, the cats are let loose from their respective bags. One by one, TVA analysts and hunters become suspicious of the illusions shown to them by Sylvie and the degree to which they may or not be illusions.
While Loki is punished by his handler, Mobius (Owen Wilson, Zoolander), in an amusing and mythologically accurate time loop (including a cameo by Jaimie Alexander as Sif), Mobius learns that one of Sylvie’s illusion “victims,” Hunter C-20 (Sasha Lane, Utopia) is “gone.” The lack of sufficient explanation has Mobius poking into dark corners while Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku, His House) goes directly to the source of her experience: Sylvie.
Things heat up when a surprising “pruning” is made at the TVA and Loki switches gears from The Adjustment Bureau to The Wild Bunch. After a tense trip down memory lane for Sylvie and Judge Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Belle), Loki and Sylvie get what they wanted, an audience with The Timekeepers. All is not as it seems, however. Following an unexpected save from within TVA, the Lord and Lady of Mischief get to brawl side by side, make a frustrating discovery, and nearly get to the greatest adventure of all … before everything changes for one of them.
[Somewhat Spoiler Alert] Stick around for the mid-credits scene to find out exactly what “pruning” means and get a wistful hope for jet-skiing hereafters.
