Only Murders in the Building Episode 6 Unravels More of the Past and Sets Up the Future

Who was Tim Kono, really? It seems like many episodes later, we are still figuring that out. Episode six of Only Murders in the Building adds a few extra layers of mystery to the case and Tim’s past. In “To Protect and Serve,” we also explore some new characters and how their perspectives will shift the future of the investigation (and the podcast).

After discovering that Tim was after a black market jewelry dealer named Angel, the crew has to decide what their next move is. How will they find out who Angel is? Sadly, Mabel’s (Selena Gomez, Hotel Transylvania) mother has other plans. She finds Mabel in Long Island and tells her she needs to stop digging around her past and focus on her future. It turns out she regrets ever letting Mabel spend time at the Arconia. Honestly, considering two murders happened there, and both of those people were in Mabel’s inner circle, who could blame her?

So, Mabel steps back from the podcast for a second and tries to focus on moving on, specifically with Oscar (Aaron Dominguez, Shaft). Both of them seemed to wait up for each other over the years, and now that they’re together, it’s easy for their chemistry to turn into a romantic relationship. However, Mabel discovers something while she’s spending time with him. The ring that Tim was after is the very same one their dead friend Zoe was wearing in the photo on New Year’s Eve all those years ago, taken the night she died.

But Mabel’s break from the podcast isn’t the only instance of someone grappling with change. The detective we met a few episodes ago who judged the crew’s love of true-crime is back, and she’s still thinking about the Tim Kono case. Detective Dee Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Dolemite Is My Name) starts wondering about the murder again after her girlfriend starts listening to the podcast, “Only Murders in the Building.” She’s not only a fan of the podcast, but she’s unsure about Dee’s detective duties and how committed Dee is to her job instead of focusing on the baby that they’re expecting. Dee, who doubted the podcast and the fact that Tim Kono’s death was more than a suicide, begins to rethink when she discovers that old evidence from the case was not submitted for examination. Her girlfriend wants her to voice this fact, but Dee is unsure since she’s so dedicated to her job and skeptical about the situation.

Meanwhile, Charles (Steve Martin, Cheaper by the Dozen) and Oliver (Martin Short, Schmigadoon!) debate what to do after parting ways with Mabel. Should the podcast go on? Apparently, Mabel (and this project) made them feel alive again, so this moment is pretty disheartening. Charles says they should stop what they’re doing and shouldn’t profit off of Mabel’s real pain surrounding this case. That is until Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane, The Lion King), a.k.a. their primary sponsor, shows them a clip of Jimmy Fallon mentioning the podcast on live TV.

Of course, Teddy is over the moon and the men behind the show can hardly believe that their popularity is about to spike. Teddy writes them a big check and tells them a moving story about his grandmother, along with how he invests in promising projects like this one with a side business named after his late grandma. The name of the business? None other than “Angel,” the name of the person Tim got his jewelry from. Yet another wild connection that’ll make your jaw drop, wondering just where the story is going to take us next.

Eventually, after some conversing with her mother, Mabel realizes she needs to see the podcast through and rejoins the men with a new piece of information: she has Tim Kono’s phone. Yup, that’s right, after Dee talked with her girlfriend, truly heard out the person she loves, and listened to the podcast for herself, she realizes she has her own role to play. She packages Tim’s phone that was never turned into evidence and sends it to Mabel, which will hopefully answer some of the questions the crew has been chasing after.

Only Murders in the Building Episode 6 was a rollercoaster, with tons of new potential leads. Which way will the story unfold? It’s hard to say for sure, but now that they have found a new prime suspect in Teddy Dimas, they have a fresh place to start. To top it all off, Only Murders in the Building was also recently renewed for a season 2! It seems like this true-crime trio is going to be on our screens for a lot longer, and we’re not complaining.

Only Murders in the Building Episode 6 is now streaming on Hulu.
