AEW Dynamite 9/29 Review: A New TNT Champion on a Night in Memory of Brodie Lee

AEW Dynamite 9/29 — a show dedicated to the late Mr. Brodie Lee — saw dreams became reality. Sammy Guevara is the new TNT Champion. Before the congratulatory remarks, and the blatant ignoring of internet trolls, I have to hand it to “God’s Favorite Champion.” Miro as titleholder is one of the most memorable title runs of his career. None of his championship runs in WWE compared to his 140-day run, the second-longest run as TNT Champion. His promos and in-ring storytelling are by the far the best in his career. Sure, he was over tremendously during this comedic “Rusev Day” shtick in WWE, but comedy gimmicks can only go so far. Miro genuinely appeared comfortable in every promo and this truly felt like a natural persona for him.

This is by no means an ending for Miro, I believe bigger things may be on the horizon.

Sammy Guevara, the short build led me to believe this was a fairy-tale story with a tragic end. From Fuego Del Sol being ruthlessly beaten (and losing his car!) by Miro, instigating Sammy’s involvement, I figured this would not be a long feud. Color me surprised when, thanks to an exposed turnbuckle, a G-T-H, followed by the 630, we would have a new titleholder. I jumped off the couch, this was another organic, unexpected moment, in my opinion, of shocking their passionate fanbase. I was ecstatic. I know not everyone on the internet agrees, and this is fine. However, you can’t deny, this is a truly upset and unexpected title change.

I loved it.

Then, the reveal for next week: BOBBY FISH wants match, and Sammy is giving it. Next week on Dynamite, Bobby Fish vs. Sammy Guevara. Hell. Yes.

The rest of the show had some very intriguing moments. CM Punk on commentary tonight, and he’s a fun guy to listen to. Imagine sitting there and every other segment hearing your name chanted over and over. He has got to love it.

Adam Cole defeated Jungle Boy

If this match took place maybe a month or two from now, I would have believed Jungle Boy could have taken the win. With Cole having come into AEW in the past month, it would have been too soon for a loss. But I will not lie, there were plenty of moments where I truly believed an upset was in the making. Cole and “Jungle” Jack Perry put on a hell of a match. The kick out from the Panama Sunrise blew the roof off the arena, but alas the Last Shot was the final blow.

After the match, the Super Elite gathered, teasing an ultimate promo from Nakazawa, but ultimately it was AEW World Champion Kenny Omega who would address the Dragon in the room – Bryan Danielson. Omega promises “no rematch” for now, and as it went to a draw, the America Dragon is officially 0-0 in AEW and is both literally and figuratively at the back of the line. Danielson came out and offered a challenge to anyone in the Super Elite, however the champ backed off. So Danielson offered a new moniker Kenny “No Balls” which the live crowd quickly turned to an antagonizing chant.

Danileson was not alone as “Elite Hunter” Frankie Kazarian, Christian Cage, and Jurassic Express arrived as backup. Omega did not like the odds, and instructed his group to bail.

I see some very interesting matches in the near future. One announced will be Nick Jackson vs. Bryan Danielson.

Don Callis was not out there tonight, and I did not miss him. While his promos can be good, at times they can feel overdrawn and too much to get a short point across.

Cody Rhodes and “Shotty” Lee Johnson defeated Matt Sydal and Dante Martin

Dante wins the MVP for this one, despite taking the L for the team. The story is Cody brazenly ignoring Arn’s advice, to a point where Cody was on the receiving end of a near-loss, it was up to Lee Johnson to drag Cody out, tag himself in, and hit his series on Dante for the win. Cody seemed a bit taken aback, but appeared to handle in stride. Lots of boos for Cody.

Here’s where it takes a turn. Tony Schiavone in the ring, and Cody off the bat demands Malaki Black come out. Arn Anderson takes the mic, and tells the American Nightmare to “stop talking.” Oh yeah, Arn verbally levels Cody, comparing him to a timid child who would give up his brand new car to a carjacker, whereas Old School Arn Anderson would pull out a glock and blow the would-be assailant’s head off. He tells Cody to drop it with Black, get his head on straight, otherwise there’s a lot more anguish in his future.

Arn and Johnson leave with a stunned Cody.

Heel turn… Inevitable.

My jaw dropped when Arn dropped the “pull a glock” line.

Jon Moxley, Eddie Kingston, and Darby Allin defeated Bear Country & Anthony Greene (formerly August Grey in NXT)

I am glad to see Bear Country back on Dynamite. I really think they have potential as a future all-star tag team. They’re big and burly, but can also throw poor souls around with suplexes. They also appear to be able to take some serious suplex bumps too. Mox and Kingston are the dictionary-definition of no-nonsense brawlers. Love it. Allin is a crazy guy.

Poor Greene.

Chalk this in the “fun category” of wrestling. I wish the wrestling fans who enjoy these simple pleasures could out-vocalize the toxic element plaguing the internet.

Promo time! Ruby Soho basks in the pure joy of wrestling in front of an AEW audience. Dr. Britt Baker alternatively puts over her passion, however berates her “hopes and dreams” aspirations for nothing more than wishful thinking. Like the other women on the AEW roster, she too will succumb to D.M.D.

The Dark Order and Orange Cassidy defeated the HFO

This one required a box of tissues.

From the get-go the tension in the Dark Order was out in the open. For a time the match seemed to begin in their favor, but the animosity saw the HFO brutally take over. After a spat in the ring, with Alan Angels throwing his mask at Evil Uno, the group fell apart. However, as Evil Uno left the ring, even to the disdain of Stu Grayson and Colt Cabana, he was cut short by Tay Conti, Anna Jay, AMANDA HUBER, and, in the moment where the tears could not be held, -1 THREW THE GODDAMNED PAPERS AT EVIL UNO. This shocked some sense into him, and the rest of the group who went on a tear, annihilating the HFO, finishing with the Alex Reynolds/John Silver flurry into the Fatality, which saw Johnny Hungie get the pinfall.

It would appear, the Dark Order… IS BACK.

I get chills just from typing this.

Lio Rush is back, says he’s brought in to bring class and some financial management expertise. He started to explain what sounded like a Ponzi Scheme, but to be bluntly honest, I tuned out because he wasn’t making a whole lot of sense.

Better luck on the next promo.

Promo from FTR – They will be back and admit to needing a bit of a break after their matches with Santana and Ortiz, following the still-fresh-in-our-minds-scary moment with Cash Wheeler. However, they are Pinnacle members and will be back in the ring soon.

Hikaru Shida is nearing her 50th win in AEW, but next week, she goes up against Serena Deeb who assures Shida it will not be against her.

In the ring – Dan Lambert with Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page cuts the most scathing promo in recent memory.

Forget the content for a moment, but just listen to the guy. There is ZERO hesitation. It appears he doesn’t stop to think about his next line, or anything. He just goes. One fluid promo without any need for break to collect thoughts. I can’t recall the last time I have heard a promo so well said, and incredibly verbally smooth at the same time. Scorpio’s promo was also good, Ethan Page… jury’s out on my final thoughts.

Tay Conti and Anna Jay defeated Penelope Ford and The Bunny

I feel like this needs to come to a point where Ford turns on Bunny and someone gets booted from the HFO. Bunny is the clear weak link, despite Ford being the one to constantly eat the pinfall or submission. This should be the focus of the breakup, where Ford could accuse Bunny of manipulating events to her downfall.

Post match, -1 celebrates with the victors. Again, tear in the eye moment.

Announced: Jade Cargill vs. Nyla Rose vs. Thunder Rosa in a Triple Threat. Ugh. Cargill will go over, won’t she. I guess putting her over will finally get Cargill taken a bit more seriously, but to be more effective, the one-on-ones would be a better choice.

In-ring promo with MJF: Maxwell Jacob Friedman runs down his accomplishments while also putting over some of the wrestlers who were there with him at the company’s origin. Jungle Boy, Sammy Guevara, who he defeated both in singles, but Darby Allin we can discuss later. However, Allin feels otherwise and interrupts. MJF takes the verbal low blow and brings up Allin’s real life trauma with the death of his uncle in a drunk-driving accident. MJF also calls Darby a “School-shooter Emo Mime.”

That… that might have been a bit too far. Even for MJF.

The end result is Darby no-selling MJF’s mental mind games, but based on a later post on Twitter, it seems MJF has much more in store.

The Main Event: Sammy Guevara defeated Miro for the TNT Championship

We’ve already covered this incredible match, and the shocker for next week. Being real with my readers, Fish had been one of the releases during WWE/NXT clean-outs, and they specifically say he is not under any contract to AEW. This could be a one-off, or perhaps the beginning of more. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see a segment with Cole and Fish next week?

AEW Dynamite 9/29 is now streaming on TNT.
