In their latest breakdown of every Oscar category before the ceremony on March 27, Marisa and Matt discuss Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay.

This year, the nominees for Best Original Screenplay are: Belfast (written by Kenneth Branagh), Don’t Look Up (written by Adam McKay; story by Adam McKay and David Sirota), King Richard (written by Zach Baylin), Licorice Pizza (written by Paul Thomas Anderson), and The Worst Person in the World (written by Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier).

The nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay are CODA (written by Sian Heder based on the film La Famille Belier), Drive My Car (written by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe, based on the short story by Haruki Murakami), Dune (written by Jon Spaithts, Denis Villeneuve and Eric Roth based on the novel by Frank Herbert), The Lost Daughter (written by Maggie Gyllenhaal, based on the novel by Elana Ferrante) and The Power of the Dog (written by Jane Campion, based on the novel by Thomas Savage).

Check back tomorrow for the episode on Best Costume Design and Best Makeup/Hairstyling.

Don’t forget to check out these previous episodes:

Best Original Song and Best Original Score: Marisa Carpico (Film Editor at ThePopBreak.com) and Matt Taylor kick off their annual Oscar category breakdowns with two of the most consistently chaotic groups of nominees: Best Original Song and Best Original Score.

In the Song Category, they praise Billie Eilish’s work for No Time to Die, dare to talk about Encanto’s Bruno and wonder how far Diane Warren will go to finally win her long overdue Oscar.

For Score, the pair begin their multi-episode praise of Dune, complain about the catch-22 of loving Nicholas Britell but hating Don’t Look Up and laude the subtle homages of the Parallel Mothers score.

Best International Film: Hosts Marisa Carpico (Film Editor at ThePopBreak.com) and Matt Taylor breakdown this competitive category.

Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short: Hosts Marisa Carpico (Film Editor at ThePopBreak.com) and Matt Taylor dissect the animated category even though they canonically avoid children whenever possible.
