AEW Dynamite 4/13 Review: An Incredible Night of Wrestling With A Terrible Ending

It’s clobberin’ time on AEW Dynamite 4/13 as we begin with a great opener — CM Punk defeating Penta Oscuro. Early on, Punk falls off the ropes in a scary moment, but thankfully was alright and able to continue the match.

I never thought in my lifetime to see Punk vs. Penta. Never thought it would happen, never imagined they would be in a promotion to cross paths. A thrilling start to the show. Lots of back and forth, Punk able to keep pace with the much faster Penta. Punk’s win takes him just a little closer to an AEW World Championship match.

Earlier today, the Jericho Appreciation Society land in style via private plane, but are met at the runway by Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz who beat up the former 2point0 members, and steal Angelo Parker’s shoes.

Jurassic Express retains the AEW Tag Team Championships against ReDragon

What a match. I really thought ReDragon was going to win. So many close calls and so many directions this could have gone. Christian, not at ringside could have turned heel… The big story coming out of this, FTR coming out seemingly to confront Jurassic Express, but run into a roadblock of an irate ReDragon.

Backstage: Blackpool Combat Club announced to face off with Gunn Club in trios this Friday night on Rampage.

Captain Shawn Dean defeated MJF… By Countout

Well, MJF started off strong on offense. But then camera backstage shows three downed security guys, one of whom… Is missing a shirt. Well, as MJF is on the floor, a security guy wearing a mask reveals himself to be… WARDLOW. All hell breaks loose, two dozen security guys wind up as a pile of bodies on the floor… and MJF gets counted… wait… He attempts to bribe referee Bryce Remsberg to stop, but Bryce hits ten and it’s all over.

Wardlow promises pain until he gets what he wants from MJF. I’m ok if he doesn’t, because bodies will continue to pile up.

Marina Shafir defeated Skye Blue

Eh. Jade Cargill and “Smart” Mark Sterling watching backstage, and Cargill is looking loonier than ever. Red Velvet in the “baddies” section.

Meh.

Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, and Daniel Garcia defeated Eddie Kingston, Santana, and Ortiz

Holy hell what a fight. Suplexes busting out amongst the punches and brawling. Underhanded tactics prevailed for the villains, Jericho able to hit Eddie with Floyd the Bat to gain the win for his team.

It seems this feud is far, far from over. I imagine after a number of setbacks, Eddie and crew will recruit two more individuals to take the fight… “on site.”

Backstage: Thunder Rosa is interrupted again by Vickie Guerrero and Nyla Rose bringing a cake to mock celebrate Rosa. The cake, predictably ends up in Nyla’s face, but the Native Beast still manages to send a strong physical message to the AEW Women’s Champion. That message, roaring loud and clear…

“I like cake… and violence!”

Seriously. She said it.

“Absolute” Ricky Starks & Powerhouse Hobbs defeated Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland

I was in absolute shock Team Taz won. Perfect. This is the correct reaction. Contest was so unpredictable and the constant exchange of offensives truly left viewers guessing who would win. Starks, the hometown hero. Keith Lee is… Keith Lee. Swerve is unbelievable. Hobbs has become an uber-hoss in the ring. The final moments were incredible, I was standing until the end. All it took was one quick interference from Taz himself to give his team the single moment to gain victory.

Lee got pinned, and I’m fine with it. I’m sure the die-hards will take to Twitter to unleash hell and call this the beginning of the end of AEW.

I say, kudos for AEW to doing something NO ONE expected.

AEW Battle of the Belts Lineup Announced – The big story in my opinion, is the Ring of Honor World Championship being defended, with champion Josh Gresham defending against Dalton Castle.

AEW Dynamite 4/13 Main Event: Samoa Joe defeats Minoru Suzuki to claim the Ring of Honor World Television Championship

Hot damn. I never thought I would ever… EVER see Joe and Suzuki in a ring against each other. This was one assault after another. The chops were as violent as I have ever seen. Both opponents were beet red and Suzuki looked bloody. Punishment would be the theme and did not disappoint. In the end, Joe managed to score the Muscle Buster and the pinfall victory.

But then post match Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt gave a faux present flipping off Joe lights go out and some really really big guy who looks like The Great Khali Junior (Satnam Singh) beat up Joe but we’re going to forget about all that.

This was an incredible main event. Absolutely incredible. AEW Dynamite once again knocked it out of the park with a pay-per-view quality television show. Kudos to all involved for putting on a show which left this viewer jumping off the couch throughout the two-hour program.

AEW Dynamite 4/13 is now streaming on the TBS app and on demand.
