AEW Dynamite Fyter Fest Week 2 Review: Eddie Should’ve Won, Sign Willow & Brody’s Dominance

Fyter Fest Week 2 kicks off with a brutal one on one with Brody King defeating Darby Allin

This was a match to kick off the crazy. King is a big bad brute who Darby compliments by selling every insane toss, throw, bomb, driver, and slam. King’s attempts to commit murder on live television do not come to fruition, as Allin continues to fight back.. Until after dodging a count out loss, falls right into the waiting arms of Brody King who DESTROYS Darby with a GANSO BOMB.

Post-match, Sting comes for the save but the lights go dark and Malakai Black is in the ring, spits the black mist at Sting who is then choked out by King. Before it gets worse, the big siren blast is heard as MIRO walks out and stares, with one eye towards the House of Black.

Miro vs. Malakai? YES PLEASE.

Backstage Cole Karter is interviewed, but interrupted by Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs. Tonight Starks is defending the FTW Championship against Karter tonight.

Blackpool Combat Club defeated The Best Friends

This was a fantastic match. No squashing here, just 100% wrestling and strong-style fighting. On commentary were William Regal and Orange Cassidy. The deadpan antics riled Regal. They’re great. Insane moments with Mox being SENT TO THE SHADOW REALM with the Awful Waffle!! Then, Wheeler Yuta is crushed with two consecutive pile-drivers by both Trent Barretta and Chuckie T.

Despite the rally by Best Friends, Yuta musters the stamina to counter an Awful Waffle with a counter seat belt lock rollup for the pinfall victory.

The story here is Wheeler Yuta going up against the stable who took him under their wing and trained him. Now the student has become the master. What a phenomenal match.

Championship Celebration with Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland – Thanks given to the fans, but the joy is interrupted by “Smart” Mark Sterling and Tony Nese who pick a fight with rapper Kevin Gates, who decks Nese and Swerve cake-faces Sterling.

Fun segment. Nothing accomplished, but good to let Lee and Swerve bask in fan appreciation.

Backstage: John Silver and Alex Reynolds get beat up by Butcher and Blade when the Dark Order members try to give shirts as gifts. Save is made by “Hangman” Adam Page. Sets up a match for Rampage.

Christian Cage and Dark Luchasaurus defeated The Varsity Blondes

This was a squash. Pillman Jr. and Garrison had no chance. Luchasaurus mauled while Christian smugly gets the win.

Post match, Jungle Boy returns, chair in-hand to confront Christian. He sends the big dino to stop him, but after a tense stare down, Luchasaurus aligns back with Jungle Boy!! Christian runs as Jungle Boy chases him into the crowd.

Well, that was abruptly unexpected.

I expect this will lead to an uber-heel turn by Luchasaurus.

Ricky Starks retains the FTW Championship against Cole Karter

Not a bad showing by Karter, but the crowd was hot for hometown Starks. Scary spot where Cole missed a 450 and instead of landing on his feet, lands on his face. Starks blasted him with a spear for the win.

Post match, Starks offered a challenge to defend the championship again. Out comes Danhausen! He is ready, but Starks balks, stalling for next week on Dynamite aka Fight for the Fallen

FTWHausen?

Up next, FTR with Tony Schiavone discuss their upcoming Best 2-out-of-3-falls match with The Briscoes at Ring of Honor’s Death Before Dishonor PPV.

Cash cuts his promo first, and then Dax cuts what might be PROMO OF THE FRICKIN YEAR.

He talks about a girl who is born with a hole in her heart, and manages to beat the odds and the hole heals. It’s his daughter. At Death Before Dishonor, he’s going to fight like an eight-year-old girl.

Backstage, Jay Lethal and his buddies are getting riled up for Saturday. Christopher Daniels enters and we get a match set up for Rampage.

Jade Cargill and Kiera Hogan defeated Willow Nightingale and Athena

Not a bad match, but not really sure where this is going to go.

It’s setting up confrontations for Statlander and Athena to challenge for championships, but Cargill has been pushed to the moon so much, will they become more fodder?

Backstage, Thunder Rosa and Toni Storm backstage, where it is announced Thunder Rosa will defend the championship against Japanese megastar Miyu Yamashita.

Dr. Britt Baker DMD rolls up and rains on the parade.

Chris Jericho defeated Eddie Kingston in the Barbed-Wire Everywhere Match

Bloodshed from the bell. The Painmaker is first to bleed as Kingston grabs the barbed wire microphone from Justin Roberts, and welcomes us to Shark Week by blasting Jericho in the head over and over.

Insane moment, Jericho scored a top rope hurricanrana which takes Eddie into a Barbed wire table, but somehow he slides and is STUCK. It looks like the wire may have gone right into the ol’ yambag. Referee Aubrey Edwards has to pry him loose. Another sick spot with Kingston suplexing Jericho off the ring apron and through a barb-wire table. Later, jericho locked Eddie in the Walls while laying on top of barb-wire! Eddie dominates most of the match, wrapping Jericho’s face in wire trying for a submission until Tay Conti runs out to attack Ruby Soho. She is stopped by Ana Jay… WHO TURNS ON RUBY! Ana Jay lowers the shark cage holding the Jericho Appreciation Society, as Conti releases the… sharks? Kingston has Jericho locked in a submission, but they bum rush Kingston, and the live crowd hates it. Suddenly, the fight evens up with BCC and Ortiz running in for the save, but it’s not enough. Sammy Guevara is the difference-maker, superkicking Eddie, then throwing him to Jericho and the Judas Effect for the win. Post match Eddie gets some fight back, and some awkward exchanges lead to Jericho getting thrown in into a barbed wire spider web.

Well, the closing moments of the match seemed to miss the mark, and Eddie losing is not at all appreciated by the live crowd, fans watching at home, and the internet. I agree this time. I was not happy. I get Eddie is a guy who “doesn’t need to win” but neither is Jericho and for once can they just book Eddie Kingston to win a big match scenario for once?

Would it kill AEW to have Eddie win? The crowd explosion would have been epic. Jericho didn’t need to win, Eddie needed the on-screen win, it would have been the right call and the fans would have praised AEW for it.

Eddie loses way too much in big match/big feud scenarios and it doesn’t sit well with me. This doesn’t make me hate the JAS even more because I already hate them enough.

Hopefully, this will lead to something bigger for Eddie. I really do. He’s shot up to be my #1 favorite wrestler of the modern era and I don’t think anything is going to change my mind.

AEW Dynamite Fyter Fest Week 2 is now available on the TBS app and on-demand.
