Even when following all the best practices and precautions, it’s hard to stay one step ahead of COVID. That’s something singer/songwriter and surfer Jack Johnson and his band have experienced over the last couple months.

On June 24, the release date of his eighth studio album, Meet the Moonlight, his team announced that Jack had contracted COVID and had to reschedule four dates of his upcoming tour, including one stop at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey.

When the rescheduled date (July 12) finally arrived, Jack took the stage, but he was surrounded by some unfamiliar faces. It turns out that while Jack was COVID-free, his band mates were not so lucky. He assembled an emergency replacement band to play for the huge crowd of fans.

The 26-song set list was loaded with hits, fan favorites, a few tracks off his latest album. He told stories about songs like how he forgot to write a chorus for “Bubbly Toes” and just left it as is, which had the crowd laughing. Jack and the band played about 2/3 of the set together before leaving for a brief moment. Jack returned and played the rest of the show by himself, taking requests from the audience. For such a big show, Jack made it feel incredibly intimate and truly memorable.
