AEW Dynamite 9/14 Review: The Grand Slam Go-Home (And Luigi Primo!)

One week to go before AEW Grand Slam, with AEW Dynamite 9/14 kicking off with Jon Moxley defeating Sammy Guevara in a semi-final bout. The odds of Sammy defeating Moxley was slim to none. Sammy bought and sold a back-headlocked DDT on the ring apron. Thought he was dead. He’s great at selling, I can praise that about him all day long. Gotta give credit to Mox, he let Sammy have a lot more offense than anyone would have believed. I didn’t believe Sammy would last as long as he did. By all rights Mox should have murdered him in minutes, but instead we got a near-15 minute fantastic match. Mox loves wrestling and my guess is he did not want a tournament match to get shorted. Interference by Ana J-A-S and a low blow from Tay Melo was ineffective. Sammy missed a senton atomico and the GTH, allowing Mox to score the Death Rider for the win.

Best line on commentary: William Regal wondering if he would get canceled if he called Tay and Jay a pair of harlots.

Back from commercial, MJF causing a scene, because he’s better than Moses.

MJF can do no wrong on the microphone. He can’t. What a great promo on Mox, intensity throughout. He goes as far as to imply a warning to whomever wins the tournament for the vacant AEW World Championship.

MJF is going to be champion soon. Very soon. What I love the most is no matter how much he trashes a live audience, he will get cheered. Hell, they cheer louder. I love it.

He introduces his best buddy and a “stable on retainer” – Stokely Hathaway and “The Firm.” He talks about using his cunning skills as a manipulator to bring together the right people to get the job done. Morrisey just wants to do whatever he wants, Lee Moriarty who wants to challenge for the Ring of Honor Pure Championship, The Gunns to become AEW Tag Team Champions, and lastly, “All Ego” Ethan Page who seeks to become the AEW All-Atlantic Champion.

I’ll be honest, I don’t have hope any of that will happen. If any of those predictions come true, it will be Ethan Page.

“Jungle Boy” Jack Perry defeats Jay Lethal

Solid back and forth match. Cool near-spot with Jungle Boy going for Killswitch. He didn’t get it as Lethal countered, but definitely caught the live crowds attention.

Promo video for Action Bronson and Hook hyping up their Grand Slam match against Matt Menard and Angelo Parker.

Backstage: Alex Marvez interviews Luigi Primo for all of four seconds, as Ethan Page interrupts and demands respect for wrestling. He’s tired of the comedy crap. Danhausen arrives and Page wastes no time in demanding a match on Rampage

Powerhouse Hobbs defeats Matt DiMartino

DiMartino dies.

After the match, Hobbs takes a mic but is interrupted by Ricky Starks, and the two go to brawl!

Swerve in Our Glory defeated Lucha Brothers in an AEW Tag Team Championship Match

What a match. Love it, love it, love it. I love wrestling. Realistically, it’s not believable to think the belts would change hands tonight. The hype for the rematch from All Out is too big to change.

Insane spot with Rey Fenix scoring a Spanish Fly on Swerve off the top, with Fenix crouched, Penta uses his brother as leverage to leap up and over, spiking Keith Lee with a Destroyer! Holy crap!

The Acclaimed walk out and no rap tonight, they only deliver words of extreme intent to dethrone them at Grand Slam next week.

Arthur Ashe stadium is going to explode next week.

Dr. Britt Baker, DMD & Serena Deeb defeated Interim AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm & Athena

Another great women’s tag team match. I love Dr. Baker, but Deeb is a machine. Dirty finish with Rebel distracting the ref while the heels use a chair to incapacitate Storm for the win.

Post match, an all-out beat down takes place until Jamie Hayter runs out and takes the chair away from Dr. Baker before she does more damage. We moment we have been waiting for does not happen, as she takes the chair and strikes Storm with it. However, Hayter has words with Baker as she departs. Dr. Baker insists she said “I’m sorry.”

Main Event of AEW Dynamite 9/14: Bryan Danielson defeats Chris Jericho in an incredible main event match

They could wrestle every week for all I care. In another universe this would have fit right at home in a NJPW ring. From the chop-fests to german suplexes, Jericho and Danielson wrestled their asses off and kudos to Jericho for going into high gear. Say what you want, but Jericho can still go the distance in a wrestling match. Unbelievable match, amazing “injury spot” which would lead to a fantastic and satisfying finish.

Next week will be Jon Moxley vs. Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Championship. Mox hits the ring and the two Blackpool Combat Club members shake hands in respect for next week. Grand Slam is a pay-per-view card as far as I am concerned.

Big question, will Mox get a third title reign, or will Danielson finally get a run of his own? MJF earlier seemed to aim his sights on Mox, one has to wonder if he will cost Mox the championship or perhaps leads to Mox winning, then immediately losing it to MJF?

Whatever the outcome, next week’s Dynamite is going to be huge.

AEW Dynamite 9/14 is now streaming on the TBS app and on demand via your local cable operator.
