Senior Writer Aaron Sarnecky and Senior TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky are back. This month they’re celebrating the 30th anniversary of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Joining them is Anthony Desiato, founder/owner of Flat Squirrel Productions and host of Summoning the Zords.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is the first iteration of Power Rangers, which is based on the Japanese franchise Super Sentai. The first episode aired on Fox Kids on August 28, 1993. The show ran for 145 episodes and ended on November 27, 1995, in the lead up to the Alien Rangers miniseries.
The Power Rangers are a superhero team of “teenagers with attitude.” Together they defend Angel Grove and the world from evil. The initial Rangers are Jason (Austin St. John), Billy (David Yost), Zack (Walter Emanuel Jones), Trini (Thuy Trang), and Kimberly (Amy Jo Johnson). Quickly joining their ranks in Season 1 is Tommy (Jason David Frank).
Power Rangers took the world by storm, and new series continue to follow. 2017’s Mighty Morphin reboot movie was a commercial failure, leaving the franchise’s future on the big screen uncertain.
Aaron, Josh, and Anthony look at the show’s first episode, also discussing their history with the franchise and the 30th anniversary special on Netflix.
You can listen to Josh and Aaron’s podcasts on the first Power Rangers movie, as well as Power Rangers Wild Force.
