California-based Local Natives took to the Pier 17 Rooftop on Tuesday night August 29, 2023.

A perfect, slightly humid, summer night under a massive late summer moon. A setting fit for a band with a subtle sexy heaviness to their sound. The three frontmen Taylor Rice, Kelsey Ayer, and Ryan Hahn open the show with their a capella song “Time Will Wait For No One,” the title track of their latest album. They quickly slip into the following track, “Just Before The Morning” easing into the show. The track that followed was “NYE,” and with it came high energy. Taylor was captivating to watch as he performed the song, bouncing around on stage and jamming on his guitar.

As the set continued they brought up Annika Bennett to play “Lemon” with them. Mid-song the band stopped the song to make sure a fan was okay and wouldn’t continue until the fan had the help they needed. Taylor even handed his water over to security to help them.

After all was okay, they started Lemon at Annika’s part saying “Just in case you didn’t like the first take, now you can do it again.” She came in with her ethereal vocals and was accompanied by the beautiful Local Natives harmonies. They then played a few tracks off of “Hummingbird” which they declared their “New York Album” and played “Bowery” in honor of ending their tour in NYC.

As they came to the end of their set with some of their more energetic tracks — “Wide Eyes,” “Sun Hands,” and “When Am I Gonna Lose You,” the crowd was clearly having a great time screaming lyrics into the NYC sky.
