NXT Vengeance Day 2024 Review: The Dusty Classic, Betrayals & More

NXT looked to kick off their 2024 in a big way with their first premium live event of the year. With six matches on the main card, title implications, a tournament final, and much more here is our NXT Vengeance Day Review!

NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Finals: Bron Breakerr & Baron Corbin vs Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams:

Although this was a slow start, the ending of the match was fantastic. You could have made a case for either team to win the tournament, but since Williams is wrestling twice on this show, it made more sense for him to lose here. Breakerr pinned Hayes after a huge spear to pick up the win and become the new number-one contenders for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

Winners: Bron Breakerr & Baron Corbin

No Disqualification: Dijak vs Joe Gacy:

I do enjoy it when we get to see other things in No DQ matches besides the obvious weapons, so I did enjoy the little toys on top of the table Dijack went through. I also thought the spot where Dijack had the duct tape over his eyes and he was struggling to pin Gacy was hilarious. Other than that this match wasn’t anything special, Dijak got the win as Gacy creepily laughed at him.

Winner: Dijack

The Family (Tony D’Angelo, Channing Lorenzo, and Adriana Rizzo) vs OTM (Lucien Price, Bronco Nima, and Jaida Parker):

To be honest, this was the match I was least looking forward to, and my expectations were correct. A lot of the wrestlers in this match were newer so I will give that the benefit of the doubt, but the match was just boring. The Family gets the win to prove who runs the streets of NXT.

Winners: The Family (Tony D’Angelo, Channing Lorenzo, and Adriana Rizzo)

NXT Women’s Championship: Lyra Valkyria vs Roxanne Perez:

This was my match of the night. Valkyria and Perez know how to go and it was no surprise that the match was good. Halfway through the match, Lola Vice cashed in her NXT Breakout Tournament contract to make the match a triple threat. Perez was the MVP in this match and dominated throughout the entire thing. Vice was also able to keep up with both women which was nice to see. Tatum Paxley took out Perez as Valkyria pinned Vice to retain her NXT Women’s Championship.

Winner: “And Still” Lyra Valkyria

NXT North American Championship: Oba Femi vs Dragon Lee:

Femi is such a powerful human being how he manhandled Lee for the entirety of the match. Femi had both the power and strength advantage in this match, but with Lee’s quick style, he was able to defend himself throughout the match. The age of Femi continues.

Winner: “And Still” Oba Femi

NXT Championship: Ilya Dragunov vs Trick Williams:

So close to perfect predictions. This was a perfect main event. Hayes accidentally took a shot at Williams’s knee and he also took out a referee to play more into the Hayes and Williams storyline they have been building too. You can tell that the crowd wanted Williams to win because at every opportunity he had the crowd erupted. Dragunov gets the win as it looks like we are about to go off the air when Hayes attacks Williams. He repeatedly beat his knee with a chair as the crowd booed.

Winner: “And Still” Ilja Dragunov

Overall:

This was a fun show to kick off NXT’s 2024. The good thing about NXT shows is that they are well-paced and don’t have too many matches on them. NXT looks to be gaining momentum as they head into Wrestlemania season, as it looks like the future is bright for NXT.
