ROH Death Before Dishonor 2024 Review: Forever Our Champion

Through such a bumpy road we finally made it to Death Before Dishonor. Now the build to this show has been horrible and there were still matches being announced the day of this show, but as always the wrestling outweighed all the logistics of this show. So, let’s see how Death Before Dishonor 2024 was!

Check out Team Kimmy vs. Team Bill for our predictions on the event.

Komander vs The Beast Mortos: This was a great way to kick off the show. The crowd was hot for this one as Komander and Mortos were pulling out moves that no one had seen before. Both men even got a fight forever chant mid-way into this match and if you watch the weekly ROH programming, that never happens anymore. Mortos gets the win to kick off the main card as they announced he would be facing Hologram on Collision after his success on the pay-per-view.

Winner: The Beast Mortos

ROH World Tag Team Championships: The Kingdom (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett) vs The Conglomeration (Kyle O’Riley and Tomohiro Ishii): This was a great match with a bad ending. As The Conglomeration was about to win the ROH Tag Team Champions, Kyle Fletcher and Don Callis came out to ringside. Callis distracted the referee while Fletcher distracted O’ Riley and Ishii. Bennett was able to deliver the low blow to help The Kingdom retain the titles. For once can we separate ROH and AEW storylines?

Winners: “And Still” The Kingdom (Matt Taven and Mike Bennett)

Texas Death Match: Diamante vs Leyla Hirsch: I will admit I had very low expectations for this match, but these two killed it. Every weapon you can think of was in this match, from tables, ladders, chairs, thumbtacks, and even flip-flops with thumbtacks attached to them. The match ended when Hirsch hit a moonsault off a ladder onto a table, but when she hit it her arm got caught in the ladder when she flipped over, so I do hope that she is okay, but go watch this one!

Winner: Leyla Hirsch

ROH Pure Championship: Wheeler Yuta vs Lee Moriarty:

Now, I am not the biggest fan of Pure Rules, I would love it if they got rid of this title but these two killed it. For a title that has not had proper direction in the entire year so far I have never seen a crowd so into a Pure Rules match before. Morarity after using all of his rope breaks used the ropes as leverage to help him pin Yuta to win the title. After the match was over Yuta took the belt and put it around Moriarty’s waist to show respect.

Winner: “And New” Lee Moriarty

ROH Women’s Television Championship: Billie Starkz vs Red Velvet: I’ll be honest this match at points was not good. Velvet got lost in the match and got confused, but in the end, both of them were able to put it together and get to the finish line. Starkz tried to do the fake neck injury bit that she did at Supercard, but Velvet was not falling for it. In a shocking turn of events, Velvet got the win and pinned Starkz cleaned and she cried and said it was rigged. I’ve worked on the convention scene with Velvet since the Pandemic Days and seeing this moment for her was awesome! #AndNew!

Winner: “And New” Red Velvet

The Winners Will Face Undisputed Kingdom for the ROH Six Man Championships at Battle of the Belts: Dustin Rhodes and The Von Erichs (Marshall and Ross Von Erich) vs The Dark Order (Evil Uno, John Silver, and Alex Reynolds): The crowd was on their feet for the entirety of this match. If you guys did not know the Von Erichs are over in Texas. They dominated most of this match-up as the crowd ate everything up. After hitting the Iron Claw and Shattered Dreams, they move on to Battle of the Belts tomorrow, where I believe they will win the ROH Six Man Championships. After the match was over Shibata came out to raise their hands as the crowd continued to go ballistic.

Winners: Dustin Rhodes and The Von Erichs (Marshall and Ross Von Erich)

Survival of the Fittest for the ROH World  Television Championship: Atlantis Jr. vs Lio Rush vs Shane Taylor vs Brian Cage vs Lee Johnson vs Johnny TV: Like I said in the predictions piece this match was lazy booking, and how this match played out proved that. At times this match was awkward and most of the eliminations were quickly one after another and the pacing was off. Shane Taylor should not have been the first eliminated and Brian Cage should not have been in the final two of this match. As you can tell, we did not crown a new ROH TV Champion.

Winner: “And Still” Atlantis Jr.

ROH Women’s Championship: Athena vs Queen Aminata: This was the match of the night hands down. Lexy Nair narrated Athena’s entrance going over her entire reign and listing all the opponents she had faced to get to this point. Aminata had the aura of a queen in her entrance and you knew that she was laser-focused. In my opinion, this was Aminata’s best match since signing to AEW/ROH as there were several points where she could have gotten the win. When she saw her minion overlord in trouble Starkz ran to the ring but Velvet followed her and the two brawled, this distracted the referee as Athena screamed for Nair’s microphone. She hit Aminata in the face which led her to hit her finisher and get the win. This is the match you watch on the show, as the question remains who will be the one to dethrone the Fallen Goddess?

Winner: “And Still” Athena

ROH World Heavyweight Championship: Mark Briscoe vs Roderick Strong: Unlike Wednesday, this time Briscoe remembered to bring his title to the ring! It is truly the minor victories that make me happy. This match did what it had to do. Briscoe was busted open on par and both men brought their all to this main event. Taven and Benett tried to get involved but O’Riley and Ishii were there to save the day. After an elbow drop from the top rope, Briscoe retained as we ended our second ROH pay-per-view of the year!

Winner: “And Still” Mark Briscoe

Overall: In typical ROH fashion, when the lights shine bright the roster can get the job done and put on a killer show. Although there were things I did not like such as Athena not winning clean, the abrupt end to Starkz’s reign when tonight was her first title defense, and more overall this was a good show. All of the matches delivered what they should have been as ROH hopefully enters a new direction where Tony Khan and the rest of the Board take the company seriously again. Until, Final Battle!
