Ahead of his appearance this Friday at Destination Wrestlecon Cleveland we had the opportunity to sit down with Matt Hardy to talk about the event, his brother’s recent return to TNA, if he and Jeff would go into the WWE Hall of Fame together, and more!
How excited are you to come to Destination Wrestlecon Cleveland with Jeff?
Matt Hardy: I am extremely excited to be coming to Wrestlecon. I wish it could be both Friday and Saturday but TNA happens to be filming television both of those days. We were able to work it out so we could just do Friday [at Wrestlecon] so we can make the Saturday taping and we can catch up and do everything that we need to do for TNA as we tape for the next few weeks of TV.
I really am pumped and excited because I love Wrestlecon events especially for Wrestlemania, but with this being Summerslam this is where fans travel from all around the globe and they come out to watch pro wrestling because this is a celebration of pro wrestling and sports entertainment. We are able to meet so many fans that we wouldn’t be able to meet otherwise people from Singapore and Japan and Australia everyone is coming out to check out Summerslam. We are able to benefit from that because at Wrestlecon they bring in guests that aren’t currently in WWE that the fans still want to see.
What was it like having Jeff come out at Against All Odds?
Matt Hardy: It was very cool and it was also a very last minute thing because his AEW deal ran out 36-48 hours before that so it truly was a buzzer beater. It was at the last second they found out he was able to do it and he said he would love to do it. I talked to TNA and creative and we were able to set it all up and long story short we were able to get him a flight the next night and he was able to fly in the day of the show that afternoon and he got there by the time the show started and we were rockin’ and rollin’.
The Hardy Boys were once again reunited! Him coming out was also pretty cool because it was a legitimate surprise and the way that we did the deal with The System screwing me over against Moose and then my wife came out and then she got in trouble too. I ended up accidentally spearing her through a table after Moose pulled her in front of me and then my brother came out and saved the day. The Hardy Boys are now up for that last great run that we really want to cement our legacies as one of the greatest tag teams of all time.
Now that The System has lost the tag team titles is that still a major goal for you and Jeff to re-achieve?
Matt Hardy: Yes. That goal does not change and it doesn’t make a difference if it’s The System, ABC, The Rascalz, First Class or whomever it may be. Whoever is holding the TNA Tag Team Championships we are going to want to come after them and we are going to want to win the TNA Tag Team titles.
How did it feel to tag with Reby at the TV Tapings last month?
Matt Hardy: It was a lot of fun for me. I rarely get nervous now a days before matches, I usually feel pretty good about what I’m going to do out there, I’ve been taking really good care of myself my cardio is up, my stamina is good, I am in pretty good physical shape considering all the wear and tear my body has been through. I was nervous just because my wife was so nervous before she was going to wrestle this match and before she was going to get involved at Against All Odds with Moose. I was nervous for her because she was so nervous, but I am glad she did it.
After having four kids and being pregnant for virtually eight years it seems because it was so back to back to back to back we were having kids and God Bless her body to go through that and for her to get herself in shape and go back out and do this. She was able to prove that she can still go back out there and be entertaining as a pro wrestler and sports entertainer. I was very proud of her and the job we did when it was us versus Eddie and Alisha Edwards.
Jeff Hardy recently said that he turned down an offer to go into the WWE HOF because he wanted to go in with you. How did that make you feel/ is that something that you would be interested in?
Matt Hardy: I think if it came to the point where they thought we were deserving of singles honor that would be cool and we would both feel very grateful for that. However it is important to us that we both go in together as a tag team because that is where we started our initial dream. Once we became wrestling fans our one dream was to become WWE Tag Team Champions one time and if we did that that is all we wanted to do, we achieved the dream! We obviously did that many times over and we expeditiously became a better team and cemented a bigger legacy than just that. So what is most important to us is that we both started our careers as a team. We both want to end our careers together as a team and that means going into the HOF together.
