Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to talk about Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for its 25th anniversary.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is the American version of the British game show of the same name. It debuted on ABC on August 16, 1999. The show entered daily syndication in 2002, before returning to primetime in 2020.
In the original format of the show, one contestant must correctly answer questions of increasing monetary value to reach the million-dollar question. The contestant has lifelines, special forms of assistance such as a phone call with a friend or asking the studio audience. Currently, contestants are celebrities playing for charity.
The original host was TV legend Regis Philbin. Others hosts include Meredith Vieira, Cedric the Entertainer, Terry Crews, Chris Harrison, and the incumbent host Jimmy Kimmel.
The primetime version of the show won two Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Game Show. Regis won once for Outstanding Game Show Host while Meredith Vieira won twice.
