Only Murders in the Building Season 4: Our True Crime Trio is Back with (Yet Another) Murder in the Building

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING – “Once Upon a Time in the West” – Charles, Oliver & Mabel are whisked to Los Angeles where a legendary film studio intends to adapt their podcast. However, Hollywood’s glitz is overshadowed by a stunning clue about Charles’ stunt double & friend Sazz Pataki. (Disney/Eric McCandless)

After a long wait, our favorite true-crime trio is back in action for Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building Season 4. Only, they are not just in the Arconia this time around, as they jet off to Los Angeles after being offered a movie deal based on their podcast. This twist certainly spices up the series, and adds a whole new batch of characters – or potential suspects – we’ll have to watch out for.

This season premiere comes at the perfect time, with Fall just around the corner and viewers eager for their mystery-fix. At the end of last season, we saw our core three tackle another big murder in the building. They barely closed the case when we saw Sazz (Jane Lynch, Glee) get shot in Charles’ apartment, a fact that’s still unknown to the trio at the start of season four.

Instead, Martin Short’s Oliver, Steve Martin’s Charles, and Selena Gomez’s Mabel all realize that fame is waiting for them in Hollywood, especially after the musical Death Rattle doesn’t do so hot and they’re all in need of something new. Hollywood producer Bev Melon gives them a call and they’re headed to LA, even though Charles is concerned about Sazz and her lack of a response ever since the last time they saw each other.

Charles does get a text from “Sazz” eventually, but something is definitely off. We’re confronted with the truth even further when we see Howard’s new dog barking in the very spot Sazz was shot previously. And somehow, the crew misses the bullet hole in Charles’ apartment for now, but we’ll get to that. For now, they’re off to meet execs about a film based on their podcast, and most of them – especially Oliver – are all for it. Mabel, however, voices her concerns with signing away her life rights to this film, which might paint her out to be someone she’s not.

We get a very real glimpse into the world of Hollywood as the trio decide whether or not they want to sign the contracts, meet with the directors (twins named the Brothers sisters) and writer, and even attend a high-scale party with celebs. We see who’s playing our detectives – real-life stars Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, and Zach Galifianakis! It wouldn’t be Only Murders in the Building without some epic celebrity cameos.

Speaking of, Loretta (Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada) is back, and still in love with Oliver, though we’ll definitely see some developments there as the season continues. Charles is still on the hunt for Sazz, while Mabel does eventually come around to the film idea – as long as she gets what she wants in return. When the trio realize Sazz never sent that text, they investigate her home further, and find it littered with a number of physical clues that indicate that something is wrong. The deal is truly sealed when Mabel gets a text from Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton, Dexter: New Blood) saying that his dog is a cadaver dog (which tells us why he was barking in Charles’ apartment). Even Lester (Teddy Coluca, The Blacklist) , the doorman, calls Charles, revealing the bullet hole in his window.

Though they didn’t see the clues the first time around, the trio head back to NYC and retrace their steps, leading them to the incinerator, where they find out Sazz’s body was burned and get an ominous text from Sazz’s phone, indicating they’re in danger.

That’s it for the first episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 4,  everyone! There’s yet another murder in the building, begging the question of why everyone doesn’t just move out, but keeping the trio’s podcast alive and well. As always, the episode was full of witty moments and fun banter between our cast, and a whole heap of new suspects. If this first installment is anything to go by, this season will be yet another thrilling web to untangle, with our true-crime crew right at the heart of it all.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is now streaming on Hulu.
