The 76th Emmy Awards are officially upon us! It might not seem like the last Emmys were so long ago, and that’s because they were just earlier this year. Still, new and old hits alike struck gold during the award show this time around.

The Big Winners of the Night

Shōgun took home the biggest wins of the evening. Out of 25 nominations, the new show racked up 18 huge wins at the Emmys. Hiroyuki Sanada is officially the first Japanese actor to win Best Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series, while Anna Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win Best Lead Actress in a Dramatic Series.

This is a huge victory and it comes as no surprise, with the fast success of the show. The FX limited series based on a novel by the same name is a historical drama that made history of its own at the Emmys, setting the record for drama series wins in the span of a year.

The Bear once again also stole the stage, cooking up even more victories. Liza Colón-Zayas made history as the first Latina actress to win Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, which is certainly cause to celebrate.

Jeremy Allen White’s speech (which had a censored line cut out on live TV) included a callout to cast mates, which won the internet’s hearts, when he said he loves his cast mates so dearly and wants them “to be in each other’s lives forever.” Though many don’t agree with The Bear being a comedy series, the show has been claiming award after award, and this Emmy cycle was no different.

Some Emmy Surprises

While fans were rooting hard for Ayo Edebiri and her amazing performance in The Bear, she didn’t take home an Emmy this time around; it instead went to Jean Smart for Hacks.

Hacks also stunned when the show took home Outstanding Comedy Series, beating out The Bear. Many were excited to see the series win the comedy category.

The Traitors also bagged the award for Outstanding Reality Competition, beating out long-time winner, Rupaul’s Drag Race.

Other Highlights from the Show

One of the other big winners of the night was Baby Reindeer. Writer, producer, and actor Richard Gadd took home multiple wins, along with Jessica Gunning taking one of her own for the series.

Some also pointed out fan-favorite moments, from the Schitt’s Creek cast reuniting when presenting an award – who joked about The Bear being nominated as a comedy – to Candice Bergen’s speech, to John Leguizamo addressing the need for representation on screen.

Overall, another Emmys has passed us by, with, as always, some mixed opinions from fans and huge sweeps across the board. Congratulations to the winners, and until next time!
